"Fair-Play Tournament Takes a Foul Turn-NY Times"

When effete pseudo-intellectual writers for NYT/IHT delve into sports commentary, one must ask if they do so to strike back those that sent them hiding in thier lockers for fear of the dreaded wedgie.

Among the many pearls: "War is not the language of sport..." What the hell is sport but a proxy for war?

Goes on to fault the US for being too rough and causing some real soul-searching among parents who put Suzie and Billy in the rec league because it was the safest option. The US should have quit on every 50-50 ball, let the Italians beat the crap out of them and then go home with a fair play cup running over with warm fuzzies.

We hope for more media coverage of the USMNT and MLS. Maybe less is better.

Of course war is not the language of sport.

Quarterbacks (or "field generals") never throw long bombs down the field, especially from the shotgun formation. Defenses never blitz said quarterbacks. George Carlin says it better but you get the point.

Let's not even get into the whole "hero" metaphor. Ted Williams and Pat Tillman are heroes. Michael Jordan threw a leather ball into a metal hoop.
