I don't think it's really constructive to go after a scapegoat given how things ended up. Trez' shot wasn't even bad. Maybe Barthez might have tried to disrupt the Italian shooters at some point, but that's hardly anythiong he could do about it. I think the Italians have had enough of being eliminated on penalties.

Ricardo Faty was very impressive for the French team at the Toulon Tournament earlier this summer, infact he was so impressive he earned himself a move from Strasbourg to Roma.
GK - Jérémy Gavanon, did reasonably well for the French under 21 side.
D - Jérémy Berthod or Gael Clichy as a possible left back, Jacques Faty at center back and you may also see Mexes finially step up, Clerc or Reveillere at right back.
M - Lassana Diarra must be in line to take over from Makalele as he continues to put in some fantastic displays for Chelsea in the holding role. Rio Antonio Mavuba may also step up again for a second chance at taking that holding role, with more competition coming from Jérémy Toulalan who will be looking to build on his great performances from last season with his new club Lyon, Abou Diaby is yet another defensive midfield option, Julien Faubert or Menez could take over from the aging Wiltord, and who else but AC Milan's Yoann Gourcuff to take the impossible mantel of replacing the legend... ZIZZOO! Two other options may also be Nasri or Ben Arfa in that role. Charles N'Zogbia may be an option down the left flank.
F - upfront, Jimmy Briand and Yohan Gouffran are two options, along with Benzema.

Frey won't be there as long as Domenech will be national coach.
GK : Coupet, Landreau, Pele
Def : Sagnol, Reveillere, Mexes, Gallas, Planus, Givet, Abidal, Evra
Mid : Vieira, Mavuba, Toulalan, Ribery, Faubert, Malouda, Gourcuff
For : Henry, Trezeguet, Saha, Anelka
I think it's not so bad.

Well we have Pongolle, Pagis and Le Tallac upfront who can possibly develop in to some class talent.
pagis is older than henry, trezeguet and anelka...
as for le tallec and pongolle, they never confirmed the talent they showed in the U18 squad
players i think are enough gifted to get to france A in the future in midfield and forward: diarra (lassana and alou), rio mavuba, nasri, mvuemba, briand, ben arfa, benzema, toulalan, gameiro, gourcuff, diaby, matuidi, gouffran, faubert, didot....but none of them has enough talent to be sure they will get to france A

I think that is a fair asessment of the next 2-4 years. Of course, new players emerge. Ribery would be a good example. Also Cisse should be considered a player in the mix as well.

What makes anyone think that Barthez is going to retire from International Football?

being 37 for euro2008 i don't see him go on for NT and i wouldn't be surprised if he retired completely from soccer since he has not found any club yet who can afford his salary

Even if he doesn't play club football, I would expect Domenech would still take him as his number 1.

manute bol is the only man for the job. not only does he have goalkeeping experience (ice hockey) but he's tall from tall city! and since he's african he's a perfect choice for the french NT! ;)

yep, which is why he should. maybe in two years he won't cut it, but right now with our starting lineup unsure, and two midfield giants definately out, it'd be great to have that defensive reassurance that he'll bring.

He's been my favourite player in this WC for his attitude on and outside the pitch.

I would second that! I'd like him to stay on myself.

[Thuram's] been my favourite player in this WC for his attitude on and outside the pitch.for off the pitch he's been mine for ages. real class.
even if he doesn't make it to 2008 (i wouldn't count him out!), he needs to stay for the first qualifiers at least to impart something to those who will step in

Although this tournament is still going on, and France could well still qualify for the the 16 - and perhaps go further with luck and so forth - it is clear that subsequent will not - and probably should not - feature a good number of the players on the current squad.
For the European qualifiers and such, when I think France needs a new coach and a new injection of players. And they should stick with them, even if things go poorly in qualifiers.
Firstly, it seems to me that Domenech should go. We know Zidane is retiring. Wiltord, Thuram, and Makelele have also are likely playing some of their last games for France. But who else will be going? Dhirasoo seems a likely candidate. Barthez as well.
But who to bring in? A lot of the controversy in the current tournament revolves around the non-inclusion of players - like Anelka and Giuly - who aren't exactly new or young. France does have a lot of promising young players - however, most seem to be defenders and midfielders. For example, Lasana Diarra at Chelsea, Matthieu Flamini at Arsenal, Francois Clerc at Lyon, maybe Ben Arfa or Benzema at OL as well. I don't know the French league that well, but it strikes me that the France is deeper at the back and in midfield than upfront, with a cursory knowledge of young players outside the team. Then again, Cisse is still quite young - but his injuries raise serious concerns. Maybe Henry will still be in great shape. I think he might be. But he isn't going to want to keep playing for a side coached like this one.
Anyway, I'd be interested in the thoughts on these questions from people who are closer observers of French football than I have been.
There's a young attacking mid at Marsielle that's pretty good. Simir Nasri, I believe his name is. I think he can be the next great attacking mid for France.

I don't see a whole lotta young strikers bursting into the scene and this may be a problem in the future.

karim benzema will be a bigger striker than samir nasri will ever be a big time mid. if nothing goes wrong he'll be awesome from awesome city.

Well, it wasn't a problem in '98. :)
