J.Cole isnt really a winger and he is not left footed. Gerrard also isnt a winger and he isnt left footed but he is better than J.Cole.
So Sven should drop J.Cole and put Gerrard on the left wing. Lampard and Carrick in the middle. And if they want Lampard and Gerrard could switch positions at times. This would solve the Lampard and Gerrard cant play together in the middle mess.
Midfield would be: Beckham Lampard Carrick Gerrard
This would also then mean England have three subs who are all capable of changing games available to come on, Lennon, J.Cole and Crouch(cos he's tall).

Dropping J.Cole and keeping Beckham on the pitch would be nothing short of ridiculous. Cole has been England's best player over the past few months, I don't see any reason to drop him.

Is J.Cole a left winger? No.

Joey is ghe closest thing we have to a play-maker and seeing we are creating NO chances now, we need either cole or lennon to beat the last man (we can't reply on Beckham and Gerrard pinging predictable 60yrd balls)

Moreso than Gerrard. Cole can play on either wing and behind the strikers, he's right-footed but as he proved in the Uruguay and Argentina friendlies, he can still put in quality crosses when cutting in. Gerrard on the left would be worse unless he was given a free role, but then A. Cole would be exposed and given the tournament he's having, that could be disastrous. J. Cole is the least of England's midfield problems.

J.Cole hasnt impressed me at all in either of the matches. He's a very good England sub and nothing else to me.

over the last few months J. Cole has been England's best player, i'd say he's more suited to the middle though.

It's because we all secretly suspect that there is some kind of magic formula involving swapping one player for another or a slight change of tactics which will transform us from a coma-inducing snorathon into a manifestation of all that is good about football.
Personally, I believe that playing Jamie Carragher up front will create this wet-dream of a football team.

Sorry, but wasn't Cole probably our best player against Paraguay. Why are we supposed to be dropping him all of a sudden?

Joe Cole is a left winger in that he's got experince playing that psotion and he's a proven performer in that psotion.
The re3ason Joe Cole can play on the left is that he's virtually two-footed.

I'm not so sure about that, he seems very reluctant to cross with his left sometimes and he def. favours his right foot, IMO.

Joe Cole has been impressiv to watch, but where is the end product? We haven't seen it from him in this World Cup yet, which is disappointing, we have seen it from Beckham.
Stepovers are entertaining, but there needs to be something at the end of it, not just a blocked shot or a cleared cross.

Peter Crouch's and Michael Owen's finishing is not Joe Cole's fault.

I don't recall seeing them receive many clear chances from Joe Cole, certainly not as many as they have from Beckham.

I don't recall Joe Cole taking a single free kick, either. If I got to take every single free kick for England, at least a few of them would likely hit Crouch somewhere around his head too.
But from open play, Cole has, in fact, created several good chances for each and was the only player who looked dangerous for most of the Paraguay game.

Joe Cole threatens defences at any level - he's proved that. He's one more problem for the other team to worry about and adds an option in our play that we haven't seen since Gazza. My concern is with Ashley Cole who isn't near his best and will need to be later on to make their partnership work.

Cole is probably our only player who can run at players with the ball. Without him we're very one-dimensional, just resorting to a plain old English direct game.
If we have to drop someone for Carrick, it has to be Lampard or Beckham.
