on tsn this morning i saw a news report on daniele de rossi personally apologizing to mc bride, and mc bride was quoted as being very supprised and happy about the sportsmanship. italy coach marcello lippi was furious with the apology and promised de rossi will be punished, but will let him wait for the punishment.

As in he was mad that De Rossi apologized, or mad that he threw the elbow in the first place?

If he was mad about the apology, he sucks.

with the apology or the foul?

Why is Lippi pissed? Is it because de Rossi apologized, thereby admitting guilt, or because he elbowed McHead in the first place?

I'm missing something here. Why would Lippi be angry about the apology? It was a classic cheap shot. Actually I think De Rossi should apologize to McBride AND the Italian team.

I thought, and it is at www.bbc.co.uk is that Lippi was furious with the elbow attack.

This is probably the same guy with so many of these names, just saying some garbage; and sitting back and seeing how we all take it.

with the apology or the foul?

Or that he got caught? :)

The worst actually was none of the above: trying to pretend like it wasn't on purpose.

Well I'm just glad that Italy finally capped this Rossi kid and that he refused Bruce's entreaties.

If he doesn't want to play for the US, fine. But why go out and elbow a US player?

;)

The quotes I saw said Lippi was pissed at de Rossi for being irresponsible and letting his team down by putting them in an unfavorable situation. It said the de Rossi had apologized to the Italian team and that Lippi planned to punish (fine?) de Rossi for his carelessness.

"I haven't yet spoken to him, he must boil in his own broth" and "There is no doubt that this boy (player) must change his ways"

Gotto love the Italian language... fair to say he's a little pissed at the elbow :)

correct. Lippi was not mad that he apologized FOR what he did, Lippi was mad at WHAT he did.

I believe the technical term is "whoosh". ;)

Yeah the cynical side of me says this is just de Rossi trying to convince the world that he isn't really a thug who blatantly attempted to injure McBride as retaliation for what he felt was a total BS own-goal.

But the more realistic side of me has shaken hands with players who have done similar things to me on the field (not as much blood, but similar motives). Then again I, like McBride yesterday, didn't have the benefit of multiple slow motion replays to see exactly what happened. I'm guessing that McBride didn't realize what had happened with the game moving so quickly and genuinely thought it was an accident. His opinion of de Rossi might have changed if/when he saw the replay though.

Apparently this is the "umpteenth" mistake by De Rossi. There have been media suggestions that not only should he sit out the tourney for such an embarrassing incident...but that he should be gone from the Azurri altogether.
