What do you think?

I think that was a momentous match for the US team.

That wasn't Portugal, or Mexico. That was a true world power --- Italy. And with 9 men.

For all we did to go toe-to-toe w/ Germany in SoKo, we lost in the end.

Very excited about today.

Press reports seems to indicate this was quite an achievement.

We controlled the midfield for most of the match and had the better and more chances, even after being down a man. Hang with the big boys? Yeah, I suppose Italy is capable of that.

The press is just trying to maintain readership/viewership. This was NOT the best acheivement in US Soccer history. That would be the Portugal or Mexico game last time around. This game would rank lower than 8th.

On the RedBulls telecast this evening, Shep Messing said it was a better result than the win against Portugal in 2002.

I think a lot of people here are pissed about the ref, and need to stand back and think about the accomplishment.

Think about the annihilation at the 1990 World Cup against Italy. 16 years later we draw with Italy even though we're down to 9 tired men.

Incredible.

No it wasn't the best USA result, though. Mexico 2-0 in 2002

If we go on to beat Ghana and advance, this result with Italy will go down as a much greater achievement. If we lose to Ghana it would undermine today's result quite a bit.

That was one of the most dramatic soccer matches I've ever watched. The ebb and flow of the game and the emotional highs and lows were unbelievable. If that didn't win over a few people and make a few new fans I'd be extremely surprised.

when you factor the odds, the continent its played in and the ref against us you have to rank this as a top 3.

I can sum our performance in one word....."Thermopylae"

I am completely exhausted after watching that match, yet I am still wired, too. I think in another hour I will hit the wall and my wife will find me passed out in front of the computer.

This ranks just behind Mexico and just in front of Germany. I can't imagine how you could think differently. We played a man down for 45 freaking minutes against a team where every single one of their subs would be a starter on our team. I mean, come on, they brought on a player of the caliber of Del Piero as a substitute (and we bring on... Jimmy Conrad!). This was a fantastic game by the USA. I kept looking at the clock in the second half and every time it seemed like no time had passed, and I was yelling for our boys to keep digging deep and going and they did it.

Against unbelievable adversity, they got a result. What would you have said before the match if someone asked you if the US could get a result against Italy playing an entire half with nine men?

I agree. It was certainly one of the most dramatic U.S. games. The best result, though? Very questionable. But Eddie Johnson promised us a war, and by god we got one today.

List the 8? On a saturday afternoon in the world cup against a recognized world power (ask any american sports fan and they know Italy is good at soccer) the only thing that makes this bigger is a win. I understand maybe Portugal, Mexico, and Columbia were bigger results MAYBE. But this was huge.

The Portugal game was better - going up three against a pre-tournament favorite and holding on is more impressive than fighting to a draw (especially since the other team had our only shot on goal today). This is up in the top three, though. Beating Mexico to make the quarters was obviously more important, but we've beaten them before and since.

It may have been the best performance ever for US fans. When else have outnumbered US fans outshouted their opposition?

This is the beauty of football. I know by the end of the match some of the casual fans I was watching it with were screaming and the tv with every Italy cross. No question in terms of creating more american soccer fans this will go down with the Columbia game in 94 and may be more important then the mexico or germany games (due to the stupid hour they were played at ).

Gotta love the shot of the US fans screaming and pretending to dive in the corner when the Italians had that late corner. That was the world feed so the entire world saw American fans being well proper fans was awesome!!.

My brother hated soccer before today, you know typical "it's boring and it sucks and I know this even though I've never even watched it." So I've been talking about the World Cup a lot and it convinced him to watch the game today.

He called me during the game and said "Yeah, I think I like soccer! The card thing confuses me though." :D

But yeah, I think it depends on what we do from here. As of now the 2002 cup run and more specifically the Mexico game is the best result of the modern era.

I've never heard a more clear and beautiful "BULL-SHIT" chant at a us soccer match. beautiful work.

Best result and best achievement may not be the same.

I'm not sure that USA 1 - T&T 0 in 1989 or USA 2 - MEX 0 in 2001 are bigger results, but I think they are bigger achievements (the start of the modern era and the "we're not gonna be *#@*ed with in our own country anymore" games).

It's a good question though...

Portugal 2002 - We caught them napping and as they showed against SK, they weren't really that good.

Mexico 2002 - Huge, but we'd already beaten them in qualifying.

Columbia 1994 - Great win, but we were at home.

What was so impressive about today was that we were coming off a devestating loss, one much bigger than the one to Poland before the Mexico match. In boxing terms, we went down for a 9 count on Monday. We could have stayed on the canvas against Italy. We didn't, even though we had to play 46 minutes with only 9 men. This was the most heroic effort in our history.

Hopefully you told him, "Don't worry...the ref is just as confused as you."
