I love Davies:
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=davies/indexAnd he concludes with this: An incomparable performance by the national team in the modern era. And listen to those fans. Football just arrived in America I think, the players and fans played and cheered with the true passion of a footballing superpower. The U.S. may not win this World Cup, they may not even qualify for the next round, but this performance continues to lay the groundwork for the future. In fact, watching the performance of those players lifted in communion with their fans, I think they just completed the basement and the first five floors.

Stumbled upon this one at soccernet as well, although it seems to have been written before the game. Seems pretty apt now, though.

And he concludes with this:
That about sums it up really. Coming into this game, I had called 1-1 and would have been satisfied, though not happy, with it in light of the Ghana result.
Coming out of the game I felt immensely proud. I could feel the crowd from my couch. I can't recall the last time I've really felt that, even from home matches.
Three cheers for Sam's Army on this one.

I don't know how the US non-soccer media is going to cover this game, but I hope that photo of a bloodied McBride is on the front page of every sports section in the USA on Sunday.
Every jerk who says that soccer is for wimps or thinks its a "non-contact" sport or thinks that Americans suck or that ties are boring needs to take a look at that photo.
This US team showed more heart and guts in this tie than in all of their '02 victories. I'm very proud of these guys.

Here are the first two parts. My Italian's not so hot, so maybe a native speaker could me out:
Battle with the USA, the Italians tie 1-1
The Americans said and they made it: for us this game is a war. The Azzuri were given outstanding difficult from the USA in the first half. Totti played around on the pitch, was yellow carded at 5 minutes and substituted with Gattuso at thirty-five. At the first chance (affondo? non so) Italy took advantage with Gilardino. Unfortunately there was the own goal of Zaccardo at twenty-six minutes. One minute after De Rossi was expulsed for a deliberate elbow in the face of an opponent. At forty-five minutes the American Mastroeni was expulsed and at the start of the second half Pope, yellow carded, was explused. The final siege of the Azzuri did not pay dividends. The Italians almost failed to get a match point for the eighth match in succession (2-0) over Ghana, next the Czech Republic (I took some liberties with the last sentence; anyone fluent can help me out?)
"For us it is a war" - The Italians were not expecting from them a start like that, the Americans attacking with gusto (arrembante - a soccer term, not familiar) and, affected by it, put the ball in the US area and immediately got a goal. Lippi, like predicted, put Zambrotta for Grosso, but the midfielder was not an advangtage because Totti was a ghost. Moreover, they were very nervous: at five minutes came a yellow card from the referee, the Uruguayan Larrionda. Toni fought but was kept in check without the exclusion of a shot. At the first chance, the Azzuri put the ball in goal. Punishment from Pirlo from the third quarter of the right, Gilardino put his head on the ball.
Edit: I might go out, but if you want, I can translate that Lippi quote later.

And he concludes with this:
I was in the moment during the game, and only now after re-playing the game realize just what the crowd was doing...
I think this has got to be the first time I have EVER heard a pro-USA crowd during an international game...
It sends shivers down my spine... WOW

Bitchy and wrong--Perrotta came right back on and played to the end, though admittedly at half speed.
Written by Miss Manners herself, apparently.
I wonder what she had to say about Peter Crouch's dred-pull?
