View Full Version : The WC Misconception thread

This is just an idea for a thread that I have thought about, and would like to see if it works. Just post misconceptions you had before the WC started,of teams or players or whatever, and how they have proven you wrong.
1) I thought all african teams were extremely fast. Then I watched togo and angola play. In fact the only fast African team was Ivory Coast
2) I thought Holland was a world class team. That might be so as far as talent goes, but I have never seen a world class team act so classless as I did when they played Ivory Coast. Holland played that game like a rugby match...I cant blame Ivory Coast for not wanting to stop play when diving dutchmen were rolling around on the ground.
3) I thought Iran would play like their president acts and talks. By far one of the best displays of fair-play in the WC so far. Good job Iran, definitely a team that merits respect in the WC.
4) I thought Croatia didn't have a chance against Brazil. They came out full force and attacked all game long. Brazil was worried...you could see it in their faces. In the end they lost, but they deserved a tie at the least.
5) I thought the USA was pretty decent, if not good. Hopefully I am just jumping to conclusions, because they totally sucked against Czech Rep.
6) I thought Luis Figo was old and slow, yet still very skilled. Now I know he is extremely fast and skilled.
anyway...theres about 20 more to go, but I would like to see where this goes first.

I thought England could actually still do very well without Wayne Rooney. But I was wrong.
I thought Ronaldo would have an impressive world cup while breaking the record, (still early and hope he proves me wrong) but was horrible against Croatia.
I thought Messi and Tevez would start and be the talk of the tournement, (though in one appearance they have impressed) but havnt gotten a start yet.

I thought elbowing or otherwise hitting people in the face was going to be watched very closely and penalized.
Clearly that hasn't been the case.

I thought Ecuador could only win at high altitude.
I thought Sven had actually learned from his five years of cockups.
I thought T&T would be thrashed in every game.
I thought Holland would play better.
I thought America were a decent team.
I thought Brazil were a solid team.
I thought the Czech Republic were overrated.

I actually said to DS via PM that the Czechs looked like they always do - great against a team who doesn't perform but will struggle against either a team with a good defence or a team that attacks their weak defence. Guess today proved me right.

After today i have to say i didnt think C.A Parreira was THAT stupid.
With Ronaldo and Adriano we play only with 9 players. Ronaldo = 0 and Adriano on the wings (because fat Ronaldo takes all the space) is = 0.1 .
There is no reason AT ALL for Robinho and Juninho dont be starters on this team.

I actually agree with the above statement.....even though I don't root for Brasil, I gotta wonder why Ronaldo is still starting with his form.....Their only real effective attacking player has been Kaka so far.
Anyways, back on topic...
I thought FIFA would iron out the terrible refeering we saw in '02 but apparently not......

I thought the Czechs would finish 4th in the group, honestly. Their lack of a good DM and a porous defense is troubling. There's still a chance they will. They were very flattered by that win against the US.

Agreed - the US just had one of those games where they couldn't do anything right. The Czechs always take teams like that apart but tend to come unstuck when they play a decent side playing well.

There's still a lot of time left for that.

Yes, with a performance like they had against Italy, the US would have done far better. And only Cech saved the Czechs from an embarrasment yesterday, and that good Ghana's not.
