OK. I've been following the situation over there and the rumor is that it's basically a win for SA. Do you feel the same way? Wouldn't Morocco be advantageous in terms of travel? I would think that the Arab League would put it's resources into one North African country's bid, especially from the oil-rich Gulf nations...or are they allowed to do that?

Nigerian/Ghana World Cup bid news...

"The Nigerians were in town earlier in the week to commit Ghana fully to the idea of joining Nigeria to bid for the 2010 world cup. Ghana signed up to the idea by which we would be required to provide two venues for the tournament and have thus officially become partners with Nigeria in the race for Africa's world cup."

"For Nigeria to be taken serious in its world cup bid, adequate preparations must be made before FIFA inspections..."

http://allafrica.com/stories/200303130626.html

"Nigerian and Ghanaian officials have signed an agreement to begin preparations towards a joint hosting of the World Cup in 2010."

Blatter says no to a Nigeria/Ghana bid.

If Nigeria wants to bid for the World Cup, they will have to do it by themselves.

The oil-rich Gulf states are members of AFC, not CAF, and since FIFA seems intent on awarding WC2010 to CAF, it seem an Arab League bid would be unworkable. In my humble opinion, only South Africa and Egypt could pull off a successful WC bid of the candidates remaining.

"Al Saadi Al Gaddafi, the man heading Libya's 2010 World Cup bid, said they are prepared to spend $6 billion on upgrading their facilities to Fifa standards."

Remember, Libya does drill some oil. Still, the question is valid: how would they be able to do that?

OK. Forget the Libya question. Here's a more pertinent question: How would the possibility of FIFA increasing the number of finalists from 32 to 36 or even 40 effect the quality of the bids? The idea, which was considered ridiculous just a few weeks ago, is now gaining some steam.

I don't know if any of the African nations could host a tournament with 36 or 40 finalists. They'd have to find hotel space and other accomodations for the extra nations. This has the potential of knocking off some candidates prematurely.

I think South Africa or Egypt will get it.

I think about AIDS being a potentional problem in South Africa. What, 33, 40 percent of people there have it? Someone please point out the flaws in thinking this may be a problem.

I think South Africa is ready.... they had all the infrastructure. South Africa is a well-known tourist destination, despite their high crime rate. I myself plan to return to South Africa about 2010 with or without the WC.

I have never been to Egypt. They should have all the hotels. I am not too sure about everything else.
