When do they decide where it is? What are the possible places?

Several months back, Brazil.

OK, the formalities aren't done yet. But it's been pretty well established that it will be CONMEBOL, and that Brazil will be the only SA country that will be making a bid.

I'm pretty sure in 2008 we will know the official host.

There are ongoing suggestions that there will be a joint bid by Argentina and Chile. IMO, they are the only ones who can match Brazil with a bid.

I think Brazil will get to host it, + because FIFA doesn't want another WC to be co-hosted, + because Brazil is in a better timezone for europeans, + Brazil hosted it's last WC in 1950, + CBF are celebrating their 100 anniversary in 2014.
Brazilians just have to build new stadiums, infrastructure ...

I was really holding out hope for an American or even Canadian WC.

The US will host it because when Brazil's bid is clearly not ready, only the US will be able to prepare a bid in such short time.

I like the idea of Brazil hosting for so many reasons.

But I also don't like it. Homefield advantage is so huge that if Brazil hosts, there's really no reason to even have the tournament. They'll win it.

I'll try and come back and visit this thread after this cup's over. Depending on how Germany does, of course.

It'd be great to have a world cup in Brazil, but do they have the infrastructure?

I believe we found out about south africa during the last world cup though. No, World Cup venues are picked 6 years ahead of time. The official bidding will begin late this year or early next year, and FIFA will pick the 2014 host at its Congress in 2008.

You are probably confusing things with EURO. You usually find out about World Cup hosts either during or right after a EURO tournament.

It's tough that so few countries really can host the cup because of the required infrastructure. I mean, I doubt we'll ever see a cup in places like Central America, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, or Central Africa. If I had to pick who I would want to host it in 2014, it would probably be Australia cuz I know they have more than enough infrastructure to handle, although of course the time zone difference would suck.
I agree about Brazil hosting it, that comes across as pretty much a win by default for them. I'd rather see Argentina/Chile if it has to be in the Western Hemisphere, even though I think Argentina hosting it is also kind of the same thing as Brazil hosting it.

Australia will probably have a very good shot at 2018 if FIFA hasn't already been bought out by China...

That'd be cool... but the difference of timezones would suck for people living in the America's.

It'll likely be the U.S. or Mexico. Brazil will get it in 2018 as consolation...

...or Maybe New Zealand should get it before OFC gets swallowed up

Here's a article i found

WESTERN Australia has joined a call for Australia to host the 2014 World Cup soccer finals.
WA Sport and Recreation Minister John Kobelke said today he hoped the Commonwealth and states would work together to put in a bid for Australia to host the games in 2014 or 2018.

"We have a fantastic record of hosting these international sporting events," Mr Kobelke said of Australia.

"We believe Perth, with its new stadium, would also be well placed to host some of those games – particularly the first round of a World Cup, whether it is 2014 or 2018."

A task force is looking at a range of options for a new sports stadium for Perth.

Mr Kobelke said a World Cup bid by Australia would fit with Perth's need to have a world class stadium that seated 50,000 or 60,000 people.

Last week, South Australia's Premier Mike Rann said he had written to Prime Minister John Howard asking for the bid proposal to be put on the agenda of next month's Council of Australian Governments meeting.

Here is another article

PRIME Minister John Howard has backed a proposal to host the World Cup finals in Australia in 2014.

Howard said the proposal, from South Australian Premier Mike Rann, had merit as Australia had proven it could handle any global sporting event.

"There is no world event that is beyond the capacity of Australia to organise superbly," he told ABC radio.

"We are very good at it, we proved that in Melbourne in 1956, we proved it in Sydney in 2000, Melbourne again with the Commonwealth Games (this year), and the very successful Rugby World Cup (in 2003).

"I'm sure, anywhere in Australia virtually, where there's a large population and the necessary infrastructure, we could do it."

Howard said he would be happy to discuss the idea with Rann at the next Council of Australian Governments meeting.

He said the proposal would have to be a national endeavour.

"As a matter of principle I'm certainly in favour of us looking at it, as a nation, it should be done on a national basis," he said.

It looks like Australia is going to make a bid for the 2014 World Cup.

I believe we found out about south africa during the last world cup though.
South Africa was determined as hosts on 15 May 2004
Germany was determined on 6 July 2000

So the 2014 World Cup will most likely be determined somewhere in the summer of 2008.
