nice choice of words in this article by US media (ABC News) , it is any wonder that english fans wherever they go are stereotyped as 'hooligans' if foreign media keep portraying them this way? No wonder past reputations can't be shaken off
-------------------------------------------------------
'Police braced themselves for the worst Saturday night as the notorious English fans made their World Cup debut for 2006.'
'For English soccer fans, a celebration can resemble a riot.'

You do make it easy for them and past history cannot be denied. Hopefully you will behave in Germany (and Europe) during this WC and continue to take preventative action against the hooligans. It's the only way to change your 'currently' justified image abroad.

The article is meant to show Americans that there is passion in the World Cup. It isn't trying to bash England fans.

I don't deny the past reputations at all.....but I'm sure the US media wouldn't write an article saying 'Poland's notorious hooligans' etc........I think the police should worry about them more than the so called English hooligans reaking havoc and run running riot thru towns and cities as they will want you to believe
Just sick of the steroeotyping that's all

Their opinion counts for little in the football world.
USA is a backwater of the beautiful game.

what stereotypes do you refer to? The English media don't pay alot of attention to the U.S team in the world cup inso to make stereotypical comments about your team and fans in all honesty

I don't think they've ever 'typed' them at all, stereo or otherwise.

I always love the convinient amnesia of the American press and to a large degree the American public when it comes to sports related violence. When the future leaders of America (college students) win a college sport, it's not uncommon for them to rampage through their city wrecking havok, attacking police and setting fires...and don't get me started on my local Laker's fans. I recall a few years back at a local baseball game an oppossing fan was shot to death. Go back to writing about batting averages for steroid juiced bat and ball players and twat quarterbacks that dont wear crash helmets when they ride motorcycles... you're ********ing boring.

It's easy to imagine that but the truth is the Tartan army makes friends wherever it goes. They seem to have the best fans in the World when it comes to international competitions.

Exactly, we have a very friendly support in the tartan army. Do you know why this is? Not many old firm fans support Scotland ;)

You need to go back to the 2002 Cup and the notorious comments of Lineker. A Yank writer wrote a satirical piece using all the wrong terminology, most of it imported from gridiron football, and Lineker took it as a serious piece and ranted about stupid Yanks.

Lineker has never ranted about anything, clearly you are completely unaware of who he is, his role on tv as the presenter and his personality.
The only time Lineker has commented on the Yanks has been to take the piss, particularly over use of phrases like "worm burner". Even then those were BBC pieces put together by the producers with Lineker as just the talking head.
