Match No. 18 - ECU v CRC - 15.06.2006 - Hamburg (GER)
Referee - CODJIA Coffi (BEN)
Assistant Referee 1 - NTAGUNGIRA Celestin (RWA)
Assistant Referee 2 - ADERODJOU Aboudou (BEN)
Fourth Official - GUEZZAZ Mohamed (MAR)
Fifth Official - DJEZZAR Brahim (ALG)

Not much to write about at the half. Seems to be calling more one-on-one holding fouls than other referees, but I haven't noticed the players complaining.

Decent performance. Thought he was a bit fussy at times, especially with aerial challenges and 9-5 situations, and I think he should have sent the Costa Rican player off for going over the ball. 71/100 for me.

There are marked differences in how games are refereed depending on where you come from. English football generally allows a lot more contact, hand checking and contact in the air. Central and South Americans like a less physical game and they will complain about physical play the same way English players complain about the referee calling the game too tight.

Really nothing notable about this game, so just a couple of trifiling observations about uniforms...

1. Codija's shirt seemed to have a very wide neckline and he had a white t-shirt on underneath. Every other referee has looked pretty spiffy and while I have no objection to the t-shrit but at least he could have worn black so as to be less obvious and glaring about it. Trifiling, I know, but this is the World Cup and professionalism counts.

2. The far side AR seemed to have a wardrobe malfunction at 24:19, for some reason his FIFA badge is on his shirt just above his waist! What the heck?!? I wonder if the velco came off his pocket, in which case he should demand a refurn from adidas.

Just my two cents.

Cheers,

Shinpan

By far, the worst foul of the tournament. Trumps the non-call on the ITA/GHA easily.

So far, I think those are the only two cases of SFP/VC that have been missed entirely (though, I do think Avery John's first caution in T&T should have been red for SFP...at least he got his red later). Other than that, there are, of course, a few elbowing fouls that an argument could be made for VC. But these two stomps are the only cases where I thought red cards needed to be shown (though, apparently, there was a foul in the UKR/ESP match that I missed, which only earned yellow).

The ITA/GHA stomp, in defense of the referee, was at least disguised. Not in this match, however. I usually don't like to use the word after a televised match, because so many people rely on replays. But, this foul which Englishref refers to, was, to me, an obvious send off. I don't think it will get Codija sent home, but I also don't think it will help his cause in the later rounds.
