I'm wondering on average about how many shots on goal and and how many goals there are per 100 total shots. An estimate is fine but if somebody knows how many shots, shots on goal, and goals there were for an entire EPL or MLS season or something that would be great.

Better way to do it and more relevant in games is do it by individual player rather in a team.

It will help you see who is really a dangerous player and who is not.

Thank you tachyon1. The total is 12.6 percent of shots scored goals and 48.7 percent of shots were on goal.
I'm looking for an overall statistic. I'm not trying to compare teams or players.

Another way to put this (ignoring misses that hit the post) ...
51.7% of shots were off-frame
36.1% of shots were saves

IMO, there's a reasonable argument that a shooter should aim to have a roughly equal percentage of misses in each category above. The idea is that a shooter should aim for the sweet spot that's inside the post but outside the range of the keeper. If he has an equal probability of missing on either side of the sweet spot, this suggests that on average, his shot is exactly where it ought to be.

Then again, this argument doesn't account for a shot's height, which complicates the geometry and is often hard for a shooter to control. Unfortunately, I doubt we have data on what percentage of shots go high.
