View Full Version : Are we in the Quarters already?

Don't want to start getting cocky, and what with me being one of the more pessimistic of England fans usually, I don't wish to start jumping too far ahead. However, to me it is pretty clear that we should already be looking at the quarters. The fact is that if we beat TT then all we need is the draw v Sweden and we are top of the group. Furthermore, if the Swedes were to get anything other than 3 points v Paraguay, then we already qualify in top spot, not bad. this will leave us with the task of seeing off any one of Ecuador, Costa Rica or Poland, none of whom look anything special. So to me, I think it is very likely that we are really just treading water till the Quarter finals, where we will meet one of Mexico, Portugal, Argentina or Holland (perhaps Ivory Coast/S&M, but less likely). I don't wish to start making predictions here, but simply put the only two I would have any worries about here would be Portugal or Argentina, and I am convinced that we are better than both of these (at this moment in time, even if we don't play as attractive football as either of these, or Holland for that matter).
(I still don't think we will win the WC though, I think we will be like Holland 1994-1998, defeat by Brazil in the 1994/2002 quarters, and then in the 1998/2006 semis, ever the optimistic am I)

You don't want to get too cocky, but England are basically treading water until the quarter finals and you think we'll win the World Cup anyway.
Hate to see you being cocky.

Thats weird. I'm pretty sure I said that England would not win the WC, but your entitled to read whatever you choose, the only problem is: if you choose to selectively read words and miss others out, you are more than likely to not understand a word of what has been said. But like i said, your entitled to read what you choose.
Also, what is so cocky about predicting wins v TT and Ecuador?
Sinner78, as a seasoned England follower, those landmines are everywhere mate, but I wouldn't be posting this unless I was confident, I guess my rare bout of optimism is not the prevalent feeling amongst other supporters.

Who knows maybe we'll draw with T&T. I'm sure Sweden thought they would be a pushover as well.

After just one game played we are in a very strong position, but there is still plenty of work to do.
We would definitely expect to reach the quarters from here, but anything can happen.
I think that that T&T may have shot their bolt now. They were due a decent performance and now they have had it. Two heroic performances like that in succession may be asking a bit much for them.

I don't know if it is significant,
But one can see, we defeat Jamaica handily, T and T, is another Caribean nation, sort of like Jamaica; might be something to take from that, not much but a little bit.

We arn't through to the second round until its mathematically impossible for us to throw it away. We are in a good position, but a good position NOW is nothing unless we are still in a good position when the group stage finishes.
T&T are capable of shocking us, and although Sweden are going through abit of a sticky patch they still have the quality to beat us if we don't concentrate

Perhaps. But then again it wouldnt be a suprise to see Sweden struggle against Paraguay who improved immensley the longer the game went on.
My prediction - England to beat T&T by at least 2 goals and Sweden to stutter and get no more than a draw against Paraguay.
Both optimistic and realistic Id say...

NP, also, when did Corrier say that about Carragher? Have you got a link to an English translation? What an awesome compliment to the man, and doesn't it show you how criminally we underrate some of our best defensive players, Italy understand the importance of such players.

No - last 16 yes - we'll beat T & T 3-1 or 3-0 and hopefully we'll see maybe Walcott/Lennon/Looney at some stage, once we're up - I think we'll then play Ecuador or Poland and I know who I'd prefer, then it's Holland for me in the quarters - who are a big threat, we all know they are a bunch of diving gaybos, who get the sympathy of every homosexual referee who ever lived - and of course, all the 'men in black' are shirtlifters are they not??? Yes? :)
Brazil in the semis, is the big stumbling block, but if only, we can get past them, it's job dun....................
