Football calendar

Does anyone know how the football calendar began? I was wondering why the WC was over the summer months. I assume that is because the early leagues played from around Sept to around May. Why were the schedules originally arranged as we find them today?

I'm pretty sure that the game started off in a September to May schedule as it follows the school/university year and that was mainly where the game was played when the first competitions started back in the 19th century.
