Like many on here, I have never thought much of US commentating. (although, i also don't want to pick it to death like many BSers because it it is a lot harder than it looks, like most anything.) However, I do have to say that I appreciate the job Brent Musberger is doing. While he plainly admits he doesn't know much about the game, he seems genuinely interested and excited. he may never become a soccer fan, but he understands and respects the importance of the World Cup and the National Team. He has always been a class act and I appreciate the job he is doing now. So many non soccer commentators act as if they are talking about soccer with a gun to their back. Musberger is enjoying this. It's nice to see. (Honestly, he would probably be a better play by play guy than anyone we have in germany right now, rather than having him host halftime shows.)

It's funny that you post this, because having worked with Brent before I was struck by how loose he was in the studio segments this morning before the Iran v. Mexico kickoff. It's nice to see him hangin' with the kids, eg; Lalas and Foudy.
I'm torn about them using him. I admit I'm a regular watcher of Match of the Day, and I miss having a quality soccer vet who's also smooth on the air hosting. The closest I've seen is Cobi Jones, but he can't host.
I think we all have figured out that ABC/ESPN is not going to cater to the hardcore soccer fan on their "A" show and Brent is the embodiment of that.

We were saying the same thing this morning about how Brent seemed genuinely interested and how much we appreciated his professionalism and interest.

Could this be a turning point in the media's treatment? or is this an one time deal, simply because Musberger is all class. That being said, i am actually liking him better here than on some of his other gigs. (not because he does a poor job in basketball, etc, but because he seems to really be enjoying the Cup. He's got world cup fever, HAHAHAHA) I bet he would really be swept up if he could get out to a stadium and call it live!!!!

I hate Musberger's play-by-play, but found him pretty palatable when I caught a little bit of the pre-game coverage this morning.
