dropped or will be dropped?

Did Wenger make any comments about the strikers/formation specifically? Anything about Trez?

and any highlights from him?

Wenger is not a big mouth kind of guy. He won't speak against Domenech. Anyway, 4-5-1 is how small and defensive teams play. It's okay for Costa Rica or Angola, but France must do better than this.

will be, but you can sense what I was getting at.

What i sense about france is that the manager wants to get the best out of Zidane not out of Henry, zidane cannot win you the trophy and why the hell does the manager play vieria and maka in the same team. and no way should they play trez, saha is a better option because he will play well with henry

ah ok, first time i read that i thought domenech went pr nightmare style and dropped vieira publicly.

however i disagree w/ the choice of trezeguet because...

I lost all my energy after this game, and to say I had faith in the team. This was a pathetic show of futility. How the hell are we supposed to cope with the bigger team if the Suisse side completely shut our offensive game down??!?! The Suisse side did what they wanted to do and hold us to a draw. So now according to everyone the Suisse side is more than a match for us. I'll have to forget today's game to find it in me to have faith in Sunday's match against South Korea. Putain de merde!

Look at the difference between these two quotes, and take a guess who should be on the pitch of the two!

I'm not the only one who thought Ribery did well today..

I think France will play better against Korea. These were 2 teams that know each other too well and don't really like to play each other. I think they will be more active against Korea and take more risks, hopefully create more space and get more shots off. I think it will be less of a grinding physical and tactical match than against the very defensive swiss.

In the end if they get through the group it may be the type of situation where a team starts off slow but picks up momentum like Italy typically does.

I just finished watching the game, and I have to say that we were lucky to get a point! Today's game proved again that possesssion means absolutely nothing if you don't put the ball in the back of the net. Switzerland came closest to realizing that aim. I didn't like the idea of playing Henry as the lone striker -- Trezeguet is the man for that role. He is always going to pull wide over the course of a game. There were a few times when he managed to put a decent ball in the box, only to have no one there ready to apply the finishing touch. I'm willing to bet that Trezeguet would have put at least one of those high balls on target. Henry is at his best with the ball at his feet...

In hindsight, playing Ribery from the start was perhaps a mistake. The magnitude of the occasion clearly got to him in the early stages. When he did get touches on the ball, he would often try to take on one player too many when a short pass to a teammate would have been the safer option. Overall, I was satisfied with the rearguard's display. It is up front that we need to sort things out before our tournament ends prematurely...

having not seen France play i'm trying to find an explanation for Henry's ineffectiveness. does Domenech let him play the free role that Wenger allows him to fill or does he place him higher up on the field? he's definitely not a classic striker so the only explanation i can conjur is that Domenech thinks he can pretend to be one. maybe a 433 with Ribery left, Saha highest, and Henry everywhere would work best?

I'm having a hard time deciding how I felt about this game. We were fair-to-good in defense; the way we deal with dead ball situations clearly needs to be improved, but I thought Abidal and Sagnol were terrific, and the Maka-Thuram-Gallas trio was impressive overall... We were bad-to-fair on offense, clearly... There's no one bringing the ball out of the defense through the middle of the field, and the four up front did not gel particularly well (it seemed that Ribery only was effective when he got away from Zidane, which was difficult since Zizou drifted to the left a lot...). On the other hand, if the referee whistles what seemed to me an obvious penalty, we might've even come out feeling positive about the entire thing... and the Swiss were on paper the toughest team in the group...

but I'm not convinced we beat South Korea if we play that slowly... So I just can't decide.

I also think trying a formation for the first time against a good defensive team that's seen you play quite a bit of late is either genius or completely idiotic. Like I said, I can't decide...

no, henry had plenty of freedom. the problem is, the result is a complete mess up front as ribery is on the left, zidane likes going out there, and finally so does henry! The whole point of a 4-5-1 is to hit the man up front but there was no man up front. The passing went everwhere but the 18 yard box, they kept moving it around outside and hoped that someone would finally muscle their way in, or latch onto a lob while fending off the swiss who got into the area to defend in mass because our attacks are too slow. brilliant

i noticed a couple of times that when a player was wide open on the other side they wouldn't switch the field they kept dribbling or instead of passing it to somone 4 yards away they would dribble to and pass that player

The only positive from this match besides the clean sheet is the fact that for future matches (maybe just 2 more if we keep playing this way!!) Zidane found and freed Henry NUMEROUS times. Henry could have finally scored from a Zidane assist.................. or even 3 times

Whomever just mentioned the setpiece defending is right. Just before Switzerland hit the bar did anyone else see the camera pan on Abidal(?) and Thuram pointing to him to cover Senderos while he covers Frei and who should the two players be who are in front of the goal nearly scoring?

Senderos and Frei!!

You could even already see and know that Senderos was going to get past him before the ball was crossed in!

To end this on another positive, it was funny to see the cameras pan to Trezeguet every time we missed a shot.

You know what, I read that Hiddink, when South Korea were down by a goal.. to TOGO.... switched to a 4-2-4 when they needed to score!!! I am VERY AFRAID of them, more than anyone else in this group. They take risks and not only that but ATTACKING risks.. in case no one knows [R][R], they won the match 2-1. (i know there was a red card for togo, but still doesn't take away form the fact that they changed to a ballsy formation mid-match for the WC and won because of it.)

ps. Serie A -> ultra-defensive league -> ultra-defensive team -> ball from Zidane -> sound familiar? Guess who actually scores from those.
