The format for the WUSA All-Star Game will feature the North All-Stars vs. the South All-Stars, as the best players from the WUSA’s eight teams will be split into two squads. The North team will feature players from the Boston Breakers, New York Power, Philadelphia Charge and San Jose CyberRays, while the South will consist of athletes from the Atlanta Beat, Carolina Courage, San Diego Spirit and Washington Freedom.
South gonna kick some booty!
And I just bought 2003 season tix for the Portland Patchouli LFC! WOOHOO I hope Michelle French is the captain!
$45 for tix?!
They're playing in the north so the North will win (again)!
Are you sure there was nothing in the press release about a team being moved? ;)
Must say thank you to Hyundai for their sponsorship of the WUSA and this All-Star event.
What is the surface at PGE?
Charge!

I believe you meant to say, "Mail it in, South. You had a better chance in the Blue-Gray football game."

Portland will pack the house. Soccer City is just dying to have a WUSA expansion team. The West needs to balance the scales by adding a team in LA and another in Portland. If Portland can show WUSA by filling the place, it will definitely be in the running. Go South!

LA would support a team. It is a soccer hot bed.
Plus the weather will always be great and without any opressive humidity. What makes that stupid?

What is the surface at PGE? It's called NexTurf. (http://www.nexturf.com) "NeXturf®'s design was carefully modeled after natural grass, and is extremely grass-like in appearance, texture, and performance. NeXturf® is a result of innovation through systematic product analysis, development, and experimentation. Scrutinized by independent testing experts and approved by professional football, soccer, and baseball players (from Atlanta, Philadelphia and Portland), NeXturf® is truly the playing surface the exceeds all expectations. Each component of the system is critical for overall product performance and quality."

From the Oregonian:
Women's soccer all-stars headed to PGE Park (http://www.oregonlive.com/sports/oregonian/index.ssf?/xml/story.ssf/html_standard.xsl?/base/sports/1028030595179750.xml)

"Certainly, with the demographics of this market, we would be a very good fit for WUSA," said Mark Schuster, president of Portland Family Entertainment, which manages PGE Park. "Are we interested? Yes. Is it some time off? Yes."
But I already bought my season tix!
=======================
Maybe there needs to be an OFFICIAL WUSA Expansion Discussion thread. :D
Maybe we need an WUSA expansion forum. :D
But the league must grow and stabilize financially before it expands.I seriously doubt the league will expand next season.

Anyone want to speculate as to WHY this match is being played a month after the championship match? I don't know...I just think that the warm fuzzy feeling of the 2002 season will be gone by the end of September. What they could have done is follow the NFL's Pro-Bowl lead and hold this match the week after FC2...preferably in Hawaii.
I guess maybe one way to look at it is that several Gold Cup matches are being held to the north of Portland and this is a good tie-in?
And how will the coach of each team be decided? Maybe they can coach by committee? Crow/Stone/McDermott/Jimmy for the south and well you get the idea.

Can each pick a player off their team to act as a partner in the match?
Would McDermott get a handicap due to being female? Or maybe the others should get one for the problem of being male?
Should it be in cage or should we just turn them loose on the pitch?
This could get FUN!!!
To paraphrase George Carlin, "I believe the battle of the coaches (he said network stars) should be fought with guns."
Anyone want to speculate as to WHY this match is being played a month after the championship match?Pure speculation:
The immediate following weekend is Labor Day weekend. The match would be guaranteed to disappear amongst the youth tourneys and family activities.
Sept. 7-8: First weekend of college football.
Sept. 14-15: "Tribute to a Champion" match in Boston and something near LA.
Hence, Sept. 21st. Another 4 PM start going head to head with MLS again. :(

Someone posted on NAS about the surface at PGE:The surface in PGE Park is the same technology as used in the new stadium in Seattle. Fake, but as close to grass as we're going to get in terms of a permanent surface that doesn't have high associated maintenance costs due to the regional climate for an outdoor surface.
There are no permanent markings on the surface. I seem to remember being told that it takes about 5 hours to switch between baseball and soccer configurations and lines. I'd guess it to be about the same for a football/soccer switch since there are more lines but no base plugs to install.
About the only thing you're likely to see on the tube if they do it right is the outline of the base plugs, the area where the bases would be for baseball. The dirt from the base areas gets showered out/fanned out on the surface and when the bases are removed and the fake grass stuff put back in place it makes for an odd looking patch with a definite line around the edge. Probably depends on how much time the spend washing the dirt out and also how much the permanent area of the surface has faded/worn in comparison to the plug pieces.
A blurb from the Boston Globe's Sports Log:The Women's United Soccer Association will hold its inaugural All-Star Game Sept. 21, more than a month after the season ends, in Portland, Ore., a city that does not have a WUSA franchise... Not the most flattering view of the announcement on Monday. :)

So we now know all about the game itself: the format of the teams, the location of the game, the date and time of the game. Um...has anyone heard anything about how they're going to pick the players to be in the game? Most All-Star games have fan voting, so we might expect to see that. If so, isn't it about time to start that voting soon?
