I suppose it's possible everybody knows this, but when you read Fever Pitch, you never really get the idea of Hornby's family's economic situation, only that his mum isn't really that wealthy and dad's a nice executive.

Not that much different from you and me.

But in browsing the web, I ended up finding out a very interesting story about his family. They're bloody toffs, and powerful ones at that! Not really a bad thing (Hornby's father is a rather remarkable figure) but certainly quite surprising when you remember the book promotes the idea of Hornby having a profoundly lower middle class existance.

Good read actually. http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qn4153/is_20050527/ai_n14644644/pg_6

I always wondered how he managed to get tickets to finals at Wembley.

To be fair to the guy, if you went as often as he did you'd be able to get a ticket through the club.

But I'm pretty sure his dad popped in with one for one of the Cup Finals.

IIRC, his Dad got him 69(?) Littlewoods Cup final, 72 FA Cup, 78 FA Cup, and 79 FA Cup final tickets.

His dad took him to the 1968 League Cup final and I'm pretty sure he got him a ticket to the 1978 Cup final.

72 came from the club itself, and I think he got 79 on his own as well. 1980 came from his mum.

I was one of the first to buy Fever Pitch and enjoyed reading some of the things written, however, despite what he says, he watched The Arsenal from a privileged position. Nick Hornby is an arsehole. All his articles are full of his middle class angst and wet liberal attitudes. Remember how he couldn't decide whether to go to the replay against the scum in the cup of visit his therapist. My advice - get some real mates and you'll never need a therapist.

Lately, to him all football fans from traditional fan-based backgrounds are hooligans. An out-date attitude if there ever was one. He once stated he and his mates cheered in 1990 World Cup when Cameroon equalised against England 'cos he disliked the type of fans attracted to following England.

Arsehole.

Meh. So his dad got wealthy. Hornby didn't seem to want a part of it and does a commitment to the club depend on your financial position? It seems to me he has done well for himself based on his own accomplishments and doesn't fall into the trappings of a rich celebrity. Kudos to him IMO.

Excuse me? Did you actually read the book? That is exactly the thing he argues against. I could bloody quote passages to the subject.

And I'm quite sure he wanted to visit his therapist first to get a preferential rate, THEN go to the game. There wasn't any question of skipping the game.

And I'd cheer against England too at the time. It's not like he took his Asian coworkers to a game against Holland where people made fascist salutes during the anthem, spat racial abuse at his mates and made monkey chants everytime Gullit touched the ball. Because England fans had no reputation for this at the time. None. I'm amazed why anyone would think that.

Working-class snobbery is really, really rich. How dare middle class people have more money than me!
