I was wondering how many of you have checked with your local ABC affiliate to see if they are preempting the World Cup for infomercials, telethons or religious programming.

I thought about this yesterday after noticing the number of matches on ABC this weekend and remembering what happened here in Toledo with the 2002 World Cup final when they didn't show it live. This morning I'm checking my email and Oliver's SoccerTV weekly bulletin reminds you to that local affiliates are not obligated to carry any of the matches for things mentioned above.

Fortunately, my local affiliate on their website claims to be airing all the matches. Have you checked yours yet?

I highly doubt that anyone is doing this. People would be screaming bloody murder over on the USMNT boards.

On Sundays, I would expect it with religious programming by local churches that have contracted with ABC affiliates for those airtime slots well in advance.

If that pisses you off, I suggest finding an online stream.

If you cry bloody murder simply because your ABC affliates pre-empts the World Cup, you don't deserve to watch it.

These are the languages available to me:

- English (from USA and Canada)
- Spanish (from USA, Canada and Mexico)
- Italian (from Canada)
- Chinese (from Canada)
- German (from USA)
- Portugese (from Canada)

And I can safely say it that I won't watch a single game from ABC/ESPN/ESPN2, even though I live in America.

Even if you are not as crazy as I am in terms of the satellite hobby, Univision is widely accessible in this country. There is really no excuse not to watch the game just because your local ABC affliate does not televise it.

The Denver affiliate was going to pre-empt England vs. Paraguay, but decided yesterday to show it. There's a thread about it on the Rapids board.

there is going to be a major problem if the philadelphia affiliate does.

You obviously haven't lived in the USA for very long if you don't think its possible to have a jesus-love fest override World Cup soccer TV coverage. :o

Anyway, few people can be in a worse position than me. I'm moving so I'll have no cable on Saturday. But the match is on Univision, so a TV with rabbit-ears is good enuf. Plus there's the option to see it in a pub.

Some games will be delayed by 2-3 hours here in Hawaii, like England vs. Paraguay and Trinidad & Tobago vs. Sweden. They should still be available in HD. On Sunday 6/18, the ABC affiliate might delay the entire triple header by 2 hours or just pre-empt the Japan vs. Croatia game and show the other two live. I have conflicting listings for 6/18 from TitanTV/TV Guide and Tribune Media.

Network O&Os (of which WPVI in Philly is one) tend to have fewer infomercials than regular affiliates, and they're also discouraged from preempting network programming except in unusual circumstances.

Different sport, but here in NY, WNYW (FOX O&O) won't be able to show the whole Puerto Rican Day Parade, which is a big local event, on Sunday. They must cut away to the NASCAR pre-race at the intended time of 1:30.

The ABC station in NYC apologized for pre-empting showing Childrens Programming and showing World Cup Soccer instead. Nice.

Yep and because of that (I'm guessing) the game wasn't in HD on ABC HD. Hopefully the live Sweden/T&T match will be.

ABC in LA just missed the first few minutes of the T&T - sweden game because they were showing a cartoon. Univision started on time and even had the national anthems. I love spanish programming.

Here in Toledo we didn't have any of the matches pre-empted however since we live so close to Detroit they also give us those listings, too. Apparently, Detroit lost out on the Sweden/T&T match. I wonder what was so important at noon on a Saturday?

The power of the press strikes again...

KXTV, the Sacramento ABC affiliate, was about to show tomorrow's USA-Italy match on a tape-delayed basis. Why? To show a locally-produced broadcast regular season home game of the Sacramento Monarchs.

Fortunately, this potential tragedy in the making was highlighted by pinko commie futbol-loving Sacramento Bee columnist Marcos Breton in today's newspaper (http://www.sacbee.com/content/sports/story/14268513p-15079855c.html). KXTV was going to be the only Top 20 TV market ABC affiliate to tape-delay USA-Italy.

My guess is the column, coupled with more than a few upset phone calls and e-mails caused the station to reverse course and tape-delay the Monarchs instead (http://www.sacbee.com/content/sports/story/14268513p-15079855c.html). :D

I understand the Monarchs are loved in this town. They are the defending WNBA champs and what not. But they don't sell out Arco like the Kings, and if certain people really care more about watching the Monarchs, they should go to Arco!

Thats weird, I live in Detroit, I watched the match on Channel 7 while I was at work last Saturday. We saw both Paraguay-England and Sweden-T&T live on our ABC affiliate...

However there have been a couple times Channel 7 has pre-empted or not shown the soccer thats being shown on ABC. I remember one time it was when we played Brazil days after the Mexico qualifier in Columbus back in '01.
