Just finished watching World Cup Live on ESPN2, it was a pretty good show, with detailed reports on the US and Germany, along with expert analysis from Eric Wynalda, Julie Foudy, and....Allen Hopkins? I hadn't heard of him leaving FSC. Anyone know anything about this?

Could be a contract thing.

Often in niche sports you see people working on multiple networks. Really only the big 3 (baseball, football, basketball) have exclusivity.

Tennis is like that. You'll see a lot of the same analysts on different networks. I think Mary Carillo is on a few in addition to her HBO work.

Two of the NASCAR pit reporters work for both Fox and for NBC/TNT.

I believe that too. I really think the US has a good chance of winning the group.

I think Italy is going to collapse from the start and the US will beat the Czech Republic...

Maybe so, but I forgot to mention this....at the end the graphics said the show was produced by SUM, the marketing arm of US Soccer. Perhaps Allen is on loan to ESPN for the World Cup...like the ads for ESPN's coverage appearing on FSC.

I hate to correct someone on here, but only one of the pit reporters, Matt Yocum, works for both Fox and NBC/TNT.

Who? Did Hopkins actually say that, or was that your own misnomer?

Allen Hopkins now works for ESPN. This was discussed in his interview with World Soccer Daily. They called him out because Allen was publicly criticizing WSD for taking part in the petition drive asking ESPN to use real soccer announcers and not baseball play-by-play people. It was the understanding that Allen was doing it because he had left Fox and was now party of the Mouse family and was trying to protect his new employers.

Thanks for the info, hadn't heard the interview.

As an added bonus, with Hopkins working for ESPN, we no longer have to hear him and Max Bretos call Galaxy games. Individually, they both are pretty good, but in tandem (probably because they were under orders to be 100 percent homers) they were horrible, the worst of any MLS combo.

I wonder how they'll use him generally. I don't recall seeing any previous work for ESPN, or hearing about him doing La Liga for Australia/New Zealand.

Hopkins called him "Patrick Vieri" ad nauseum during Fox Sports World's coverage of the 2000 UEFA Cup Final between Arsenal and Galatasaray. It was unbelieveable. I wanted to reach through the TV and slap him.

Also, we won't have to hear him do the Bundesliga games next season.

Allen Hopkins was a freelancer at FOX Sports World/FOX Soccer Channel.

With FOX Soccer Channel cutting back on products (no more French League, and the Bundesliga is unlikely to be back given the rights situation), one has to wonder whether FOX Soccer Channel still has a need for Hopkins' services. (Ditto Ridge Mahoney, who often filled in for Hopkins on Bundesliga telecasts in the past.)

FSC already has too many guys on the air, with Bretos (staff announcer), Webster (staff producer), and Miles (staff associate producer) on staff, plus Mark Rogondino as a freelancer (don't know about John Hertz).

we can only hope....

now if they could only get rid of Bretos.... that would make alot of people very happy.....

Don't think that's true. Heard him on the most recent Galaxy game I saw.

If he's contracted by the Galaxy to do their games, that's a separate agreement. Unless he has to be in Bristol every weekend, I'm sure he can still do Galaxy games if he has the time.

a - I thought all signs pointed to FSC firing Bretos a while back. Can't recall where I read that, though....

b - Last I saw Christian Miles (Memorial Day Weekend), he wasn't on staff at FSC anymore. And I don't believe he has been for a while.

I thought someone else did too, besides Matt? Maybe not.
