Colbert Report on Comedy Central also had a skit on the WC...the Daiy Word was "Goaaaaallllllllll". Colbert played the role of soccer hater...but was funny and in the end said we should root for the US.
With His character on that show I knew he would be a anti-soccer person...but thats also good exposure and everyone knows he was kidding.

and everyone knows he was kidding.
Everyone....except the 100 people who will come on these boards and declare him to be the devil, of course.

If Colbert hadn't attacked soccer, I would have been bitterly disappointed.
Unfortunately, the lines were too close to what actual soccer-bashers say and mean, so it feel sort of flat for me. I thought John Hodgman on the Daily Show was hilarious, but then he always is.

My favorite line of Colbert's last night was when he said something along the lines of soccer being the metric system of sports so the US should reject it.

Yeah, some times his parody is TOO good and some "true believers" can't recognize it as such. Which in someways makes it funnier. :p

Let's hope that none of them writes him a letter that winds up getting the letter writer interviewed on The Colbert Report as a representative American soccer fan. <shudder>

Funny thing is that Colbert made almost exactly the same point as St. Paul columnist Tom Peters -- use the World Cup to spot illegal immigrants. Except that Colbert was joking.
I'm figuring we'll see a major backlash against Colbert because he said he doesn't trust a sport in which U.S. women are "better" than U.S. men. That'll take about 10 posts to degenerate into a Julie Foudy bashfest.
