from shankly gates site:
Gerard Houllier has revealed the reasoning behind the proposed signing of Monaco goalkeeper Patrice Luzi. Liverpool are set to snap up the 21-year-old custodian on a free transfer and on a two year contract.
Liverpool are bringing in Luzi as a replacement for Jorgen Nielsen, who left the club on a free transfer earlier this summer.
Liverpool boss Houllier is quoted on the official website as saying: "I want four goalkeepers at the club. Experience says that the top clubs all have four goalkeepers and since Jorgen Nielsen left at the end of last season I always intended to bring somebody else in."
"Patrice Luzi was available on a free transfer from Monaco. He's not ready for the first team yet but we'll work with him and improve him."
4 goalies seems a lot doesn't it?

do Aresenal and ManU have 4 keepers? does the 4th keep even get to see the light of day (other than at reserve matches)?

Seems odd doesn't it.
I mean you have Dudek playing, Kirkland on the bench and probably for Littlewoods cup matches and most of the reserve matches unless the Reds are in Europe. Then the third choice goalie plays for the reserves. But 4 just seems to be overkill.

safety first...see, if Dudek injures himself in training, then Kirkland hits his head on the post during a game and suffers a concussion, so Arphexad comes in and also hits his head, then who would be goalkeeper?

ha ha. Surely Tommy Lawrence is still around if we get that much bad luck :D

well then Thommo can come in and save a penalty from Fowler, if it comes down to that.

It is precautionary only. Jorgen Nielsen never saw fisrt team action for Liverpool. THe kid is onlyy21 as well, so perhaps he can be groomed as a future replacement for one of the first team keepers in the future.

Another Goalie, interesting. My only comment is, what is Kirkland hanging around for. He's a class young goalie probably destined to play for England yet he gets to sit on the bench game after game. The best he can hope for is that it's Dudek that hits the post.:)
I suppose there's always a chance if someting does happen but he doesn't get any match practice. I'm sure he trains with the rest but it's hardly the same.
Some other team is going to lose a goalie this season and make him and offer he can't refuse.
Or Alex is going to realize what Barthez really is and trade for him....;)
