Guess who got the new S-Tone Inc. Album!!!

Yes!! It is I! Actually, I may have made a mistake, as I believe I will soon have an extra copy - not sure if I'll actually sell it or not. I'll post the info. if I do - I wouldn't charge more than what I paid, + it would be mint+unopened. But, the CD from abroad cost about 25-30 bucks.

The CD is titled Sobrenatural, and it is better than the previous two to me. It is far more jazzy, but perhaps that can be attributed to the groups new label: SCHEMA!. Go figure. Schema is perhaps the biggest Bossa label out of Italy, and to pry away S-Tone Inc. from Milano was something else. Remember, Schema also has Nicola Conte, the Break N Bossa series, Les Hommes, Soulstance and a slew of comps like Fez File and etc.

I guess that explains the remixed version of "Arejar" that can be heard on Brazilectro 4: it was remixed by Soulstance.

Anyway, it's solid. Most recognized will be Rondevous a Minuet, La Boca Del Rio and In the Mood for Love. I think this will do better than the others because it is decidedly more latin flavored, and way more bossa inspired. As much as I like the bossa flavor, don't be mistaken - I don't think the tracks have as much of a soulful feel as Ainda Sonhar or Arejar did. So you sacrifice that, perhaps.

All in all, a nice release. But only really for the collector. While I wouldn't place this above recent additions like Tom & Joyce, it still holds its own and is, all in all, better than their previous two albums "Free Spirit" and "Love Un-limited".

This is all fine and good... lots of great music... but how about some pop/rock/hip-hop...

Why can't I find Pato Fu, O Rappa and other great bands today here in the states?

I definitely recommend those two groups though. Pato Fu is pop, O Rappa is rap/hiphop I guess if you want to define them in those terms.

And then of course the great bands like Legiao Urbana, Paralamas do Sucesso...

Everyone knows about bossa nova...

Let's hear more about these!!!

Robert

BTW, if anyone missed it, definitely check out the Mutantes recommendation earlier in the thread.

Yo Ombak - do you have the Brazilian stores by where you live? THere are tons of them up here in Mass - some places there are like 3 or 4 of them that sell goods and music - tons nad tons of music from Brasil. Life recordings from concerts, all sorts of things and all sorts of styles - Rock like Skank and etc. and old MPB and of course Bossa Nova. I think that might be the best place to get the music - outside of Brazil itself. :D I do like Mutantes too - hey man just talk about it!

Don't know where to start - I did pick up a few comps and artist tracks - Da Lata, S-Tone Inc. etc. Hmm. Funny thing though - a lot of my music thogh is French these days and chillout.. Maybe I will start a new thread? lol

There's a classical group called the Brazilian Guitar Quartet that rearranges Brazilian compositions for four guitars. It is pretty cool.

Don't be scared by the bad album covers:

I need to check out a bunch of the stuff you've been posting earlier. French music is cool too. I've just discovered Paris Combo. Their album "Living Room" is quite awesome.

Now here is a record that is unreal. Don't let the album cover fool you. It is one of the worst album covers I've ever seen, but the music is unreal. Some of it is Brasilian, the rest is from various south american countries. I saw this guy in concert earlier this year and he did a program of all Brazilian music that was unstoppable. He also has an album of all spanish music called "The Gates of Spain" that is great. Once more, don't be frightened by the album cover. Oh yeah, he trained with guitar ninja Andres Segovia.

I think we need to start a general world music thread. I love it all: Brazilian, Indian, Spanish, French, Vietnamese, Chinese, etc. etc.

Woah - nice! And don't worry - I have some $hitty looking album covers too. Will post later - have a few new ones - Chill Brazil, etc. But didn't get a lot of Brazil music - mostly French/UK stuff. yikes.

For anyone interested - Tom & Joyce is now available on Amazon.com... but beware - it's a bit pricey. Los Ladrones "Montana Rusa" is also available.

And.... I redid some listmania lists and did a "formal" review of Tom & Joyce - probably be published over the weekend. It shouldn't be too hard to tell who I am. ;) Just look for the one with Smoke City as the first group - Tom & Joyce will be second - all in all I have about 7 lists up there.

I debated starting a Musica a Italia but... since I first posted Nicola Conte in a Brazil thread since he rips Bossa, I figure I'll put it here.

New Album from Nicola Conte!!

http://www.ishtar.it/immaginied/349.jpg

First there was Jet Sounds, then there is "Jet Sounds - Re-Mixed". And now there is going to be a new album in which he features.... get this, the lovely Rosalia De Souza of Les Hommes.

This is gonna be good....

Think about it really - the whole start of disc two in Break & Bossa V featured Rosalia De Sousa and Nicola Conte with bossa beats. So now there's gonna be a pretty kickin' cd featuring her - and this comes not much longer than Rosalia De Sousa and regular nu-jazz group Les Hommes released an album here in the United States through ESL.

Very nice, very nice. It's due out on November Fourth - but it probably won't be an easy pick-up for a few months. Rest assured I'll find one and review it. Although I'm still, honestly, tracking down Jet Sounds Re-mixed too...

So Thank "Schema". That is the label of S-Tone Inc., Conte, and Les Hommes along with Gerardo Frisina and Soulstance to name a few. Find out more at www.ishtar.it... don't worry it is not all in Italian.

Another thing - Reminiscence Quartet can be found on regular Amazon.com for now. Maybe only one or two tracks. Good stuff. You can find an unreleased single of theirs in Paris Lounge too...

Yeah, maybe I should just change the name of this thread to "International Music" or something. Although Remi Quartet's singer is very much Brazilian... (Salome De Bahia in Orlandivo's classic track).

Well - now there is an Italian thread. But for the Brazilian fans - Remember Andrea Marquee? Lovely and cute (though you may disagree since the pictures of her on the net from a Sao Paulo concert are horribl!) her album Zumbi was a huge success. Actually, I think she was one of the reasons I started the first Music of Brazil threads.

Well... she has a new album out!! Just found out about it.

http://www.tvcultura.com.br/musikaos/46/imagens/musica-andreamarquee1.jpg
Trust me... she's adorable!

Novo disco is called Melhores Momentos. When I pick it up - I'll let you know what I think of it. Zumbi was pretty good but... honestly I think it was like one of those discs that over time, gets a bit out of date... which I guess says something about "quality".

I did pick up Da Lata's new Remix album though. And let me tell you - I was actually disappointed. The CD is much like Jazzanova's release where they remixed soem tracks - or like Thievery Corporation's Abductions and Reconstructions. I did a review on it on Amazon.com (surprise surprise) but it probably will not be published until Tuesday or Wednesday - so you're getting the "exclusive". lol. Anyway, Da Lata is very beat heavy - and this CD emphasizes that side of their music over the melodies IMO. Gone is the mysticism of Cores, Rain Song and Barboleta and in it's place are beats and sambas.

Don't get me wrong - it is still a quality album and it's perfect for the collection - I will listen to this again - just not as often as I would have hoped. ANd if you're going to spend 30 bucks for a single CD - make sure you're at least willing to do that much.

Dude I have been doing some looking at this CD - it is interesting man! There are a lot of awesome composers and musicians involved - I can't wait to hear it. I'll check Borders tomorrow (lol - you'd die if you knew what my surname is).

He's on a fairly obscure label called Tritone Records I believe. If you can't find it at Borders, it can be ordered through Amazon, although I got mine at his show.

If you have any more trouble finding it, let me know, and I think there's a website or phone number on the disc to call for ordering.

Nina Miranda is featured on another release: Arkestra 1

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00006JM8G.01._PE6_SCMZZZZZZZ_.jpg

This was released in the United States under ESL music - the same label that brings over the Bossa Italian tracks from Schema (Nicola Conte, Les Hommes, Rosaria De Sousa, etc.) Nina Miranda is of Smoke City fame, and has featured in compilations and has featured in other artists works - like Bebel Gilberto's Tanto Tempo and Christian Franck's other group, Da Lata.

Don't have it yet - but will soon. After all, Smoke City is one of my all time favorite groups. (of course everyone already knew that).

It's described as being downtempo with a touch of Bossa, and a dash of electronic. Similar to "Koop" cd. Hmm... but I don't have Koop's cd so I'm not really sure. Will review when i have it.

THere is a great deal of music in the pipelines now and for November release. For starters, there is sort of a "Brasil 2Mil" part 2 already out in Germany.

http://www.crammed.be/zir/graphics/zir11m.jpg

Of course, it is not really a sequel to Brasil 2Mil. This release does feature many of the Crammed label brazilian artists, but what is very intriguing about this is that Cibelle is starting to be pushed. She worked heavily with the late Suba, and her voice is incredible. A new album from her may be out sometime next spring. Also included are a few new artists and re-mixes by Conte and etc. But more than half the cd contains artsits that already have works out there (bossacucanova, Trio Mircotto, etc).

Bebel

Also in the pipeline is Italian news from - Soulstance's new album is to be released in January. Should be interesting. And Nicola Conte's remix album is fantastic - will review later. A preview - Kyoto Jazz Massive participated in the project.

And of course, next week, Rosalia De Sousa's new album hits the market. I've only heard a few of the tracks - but wow.... it will be amazing.

Hopefully I can get French singer Helena, and Gerardo Frisina soon. But it has proved challenging to find them.

Actually, to be honest, she is not so so so hot. Fantastic figure, but she is not really hot. The picture is very flattering though. Bebel Gilberto though has an interesting history - daughter to Joao Gilberto and Miucha (not Astrud Gilberto "Girl from Ipanema") Bebel has been around for a while - I'm honestly not sure how old she is - maybe late thirties. I first really noticed her in the Red Hot +Rio album with Cazuza, along with Towa Tei's "Future Listening" (IMO, one of the top 10 cd's that I own)

Oh yeah, anyway, there will be a new Glucklich compilation coming out. Vol 5. Done by Rainer Truby of Truby Trio, this one features Raccoon, Les Gammas, a taste from the new Nicola Conte cd and a few more.

http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B00006LIFU.03.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

This one I think is supposed to be like a link between older bossa tracks and newer ones but of course that is questionable since the Raccoon track was out in I think 2000... This series has had it's ups and downs. The original one was older jazz/fusion tracks from Germany with a Brazilian/Latin flavor. It was awesome. The second one was much the same but not nearly as strong. The third was sort of like an intro into the "new" sound, and came out at about the same time as Jet Society or Brazilectro vol 1, Break & Bossa 1+2, Bossa Brava series. The Fourth was pretty damn good - same time frame as Brazilectro 2.

Then Rainer Truby took a year off before releasing this feature - so you know quality was the main focus. If you have Brazilectro 3, you may recognize a few tracks and if you're into the Break & Bossa series, I think a few tracks overlap from there as well. Hey, it is a Compost release.

Anyway, will review in depth once I get my hands on it. Lots is in the pipeline in Europe from the bossa/club scene.

Oh yes, and Nicola Conte's remix album will be out in the United States in the middle of November. It is fantastic, and the remix artists included are phenomenal to the scene.

The Orquestra de Sao Paulo is coming to my town soon with Sergio & Odair Assad (guitar duo).

They are doing a program of Brazilian music for orchestra and guitar, should be pretty awesome.

Man, that should be a good show. Sit back, with the ladies, have a martini in hand and enjoy the music. Nothing better. I saw Luciana Sousa live some months ago and she was tremendous. But Sergio Assad... nice. The sound will be incredible.

So in the pipeline for the next few months... officially... Kyoto Jazz Massive's Spirit of the Sun...

http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B00006IUPN.03.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

Can't wait to get my hands on it. You know, it's actually more expensive here in the United States than in Europe? That is one thing that really is getting to me. The music I collect, no matter if it is from South America or Asia, seems to all be in Europe, and cheaper than in the United States.

Also... Lava... from the Brazilectro/SPV label.

http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B00005TZMT.03.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

He's awesome. I honestly don't know much of what to expect - but he's been getting serious air-play and a buddy says this is the one to have. I'll check it out - can't be that bad if it's a feature on a otherwise comp. oriented label. Or can it?

But that's about it. I don't think I'll have much cookin' for the next few weeks. But we'll see when the material arrives.

Wow, guess it's been a while since I had somethign to actually review, huh?

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000063UL6.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

This is an older cd that was re-issued - "debut" yesterday. The big deal about this one is that it features Bebel Gilberto. But mark my words - this is not new. The tracks are circa 1991, and the sound and style is as such.

But having said that, it's not actually a pretty good album. It does have a far more "Brazilian" feeling than the newer stuff that Bebel Gilberto put out after that (Towa Tei's Future listening, Tanto Tempo, Mirror Conspiracy, Kyoto Jazz Massive's "The View from Her Room"). Today, she's more a "nu-jazz/bossa" artist. But here, she has a distinct Brazil sound, and the tracks are very light. I especially like Eo Poss Dizer and Amor Unilateral. But the real story behind this cd is that the writer of the tracks is Japanese - thus tying the strong Brazil-Japan link with music and, well, life I suppose. Amazing - it really has a sense of xinga.

Yumi Matsutoya is the writer, and I guess, although this isn't the most polished release, it is one of the original "Fusion" releases that Kyoto Jazz, Towa Tei, Yoshinori Sunahara and etc. from Japan base off of.

http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B000066F8Y.03.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

Take a look at this one.... pretty good. So, having given it a real good listen too I think it's safe to say it's a success. I will review later... out of time.
