Since I'm going to be in Munich on the 21st, I was wondering if it's worth the effort and expense of going to this match. Anyone else doing it?
Also, my wife is concerned about violence from Serbian fans. Anyone know if there's anything to be concerned about?

I'm going with a friend of mine. We're going to be in Munich, so it seemed like a good match to take in. I'm looking forward to checking out the Ivory Coast in action, as I've never seen them before.
I'm not too worried about crowd violence/hooliganism. I haven't run into too many problems at past world cups, so hopefully this one won't be much different. Not sure if I'm being naive or optimistic, but hopefully the latter.

I have it in my plans to try to get a ticket to this match, since I will be in Munich as well. Anyone have any extras? I was thinking it might be possible to buy a ticket on the street before the game, since its a big stadium and this is not the biggest matchup out there.

So, you're saying she should be worried, or she shouldn't? :)

No dude, you shouldn't.
I apologize for the rude comment, but the stereotyping gets old after awhile.
But if your wife is really that concerned, maybe you should sell your tickets to me at face value :D

No problem. I didn't mean to offend; just trying to understand the landscape a bit better since we are newbies when it comes to watching soccer games in Europe.

We played Yugoslavia in France'98. They booed our national anthem; I didn't see or hear of anything else. As usual, there were plenty of riot police around. Before & after, the Yugos kept coming up to me talking about their cousins in 'Bronx'.

The Serbia & Montenegro fans have been known to boo their own national anthem. They're funny like that.
I've been to Serbia four times, attending a Partizan game on one occasion. They're just normal people. No reason to be any more concerned about them than you would any other fans.

I'm going to this game. I have a couple friends from Cote d'Ivoire and I told them I'd pull for them in this game. They told me to wear an orange shirt to the match. I only could get a single ticket through the FIFA resale, so my travelling partner probably won't get in unless we can find a cheap ticket for him. In that case if anyone sees a tall white American guy in an orange shirt by himself in block 125 feel free to say hello.
Speaking of the booing of their own national anthem, I wonder if that has to do with the sort of dual identity of the country. In fact, there was an election recently in Montengro where the citizens decided (by the slimmest of margins) to become independent from Sebia. So I guess this is the last time we will see a single Serbia and Montenegro team at the world cup?

A lot of interesting political things gong in both of these countries.

Does anyone know a good bar near the stadium in Munich where we can meet up before the game? My friend and I would be up for it.

Not really, it's more to do with the fact that it's the same anthem that was used in the old Yugoslavia and the fans think it's time to move on.

Yes, but it'll be mostly the same team anyway - there's only one Montenegrin player on the current squad. BTW, the margin for secession was 55.5% - only slightly above the required 55%, but a clear majority nonetheless.

From what I can tell, the stadium is off on its own in the outskirts of Munich. My guess is the only place to meet up would be at the FanFest. There may be a beerhall or two in Munich though.

I'm going. Should be a good game.
I don't think the stadium is that far out either.

Since Argentina/Holland is going on at the exact same time as this one, tickets might not be in very high demand outside the stadium. Good luck finding tickets!

I'm on the FIFA waiting list for this one..... Even if I don't get allocated tickets via FIFA, I'm going to try to head down there from Nuremberg and try to score tix outside the Stadium. There's no way this game is going to sell out- especially since it's at the same time as Arg.- Holland. Plus, it's being played in a huge stadium.
