Marti Jones is an acoustic-style singer married to Don Dixon, who co-produced REM's first EP. I have always loved her first record, Unsophisticated Time, but never got into her second one, Used Guitars. Recently, I decided to put that first record on a tape and put Used Guitars on the extra space. Lo and behold, I discovered that the second one is much better and more timeless than the first one. All these years, it sat on the shelf with little or no listenings and now, I can't get it out of the tape player or off the turntable.

My insertions into this category are as follows:

Steely Dan: Got the box set as a gift, liked the singles before, love the whole catalogue now. "Gold Teeth Pt. 2" probably my fave.

Nick Drake: What a talent...one of the few things I can thank Volkswagen (and commercial advertising) for. Bryter Later and Pink Moon are incredible albums!!

David Gray is another guy I plan on buying more of his music.

Anyway, I absolutely love the CD and will probably get the Stooges' two other albums.

You gotta listen to Fun House. I had friends who couldnt stay in the room when it was on, it was so intense.

I like Byrne's latin stuff, but thought I would provide a humorous anecdote about it. I was listening to his version of Maria Lando with a friend from Costa Rica, I asked her what she thought and she said, "The music is good, but his Spanish is terrible...I can't understand much of what he is saying."

You should hear the remake he did with Marisa Monte in "Waters of March" on Red Hot + Rio. She speaks in Portuguese, he speaks in English - it's kind of funny.

He did a lot of Brazil compilations with older MPB artists. Well... the only ones I can think of are his Beleza Tropical ones. I never really got into David Byrne's stuff, but have two of the Beleza compilations. Maybe I'll give it another listen and see if I like it.

Bands I'd been meaning to check out for a while and finally got around to: June of 44 and Uncle Tupelo. The former is great to listen to before playing soccer; the latter is great to listen to while drinking and er...nothing else really.
