Norman Chad is sindicated in almost every major market newspaper in the country. He's also a relatively well-known "soccer-basher" insomuch as he's a stereotype reinforcer (he writes comically, it's funny, so leave it alone).
This morning's column is some good pub for the World Cup targeted to the average sports fan. As a fan of all major sports, I like his POV. Today, he's reinforcing a point made many a time here: (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/06/04/AR2006060400678.html)
Timeouts, fouls, and commercial breaks kill NBA games and force you to listen to the announcers expound on the importance of it all down to the nanosecond - like baseball announcers in an 11-0 laugher (my poor Indians last night on ESPN's game of the week).
Unfortunately, I don't think he got the memo that 'Celo's doing WC games.

Poor Nowitzki - wonder if his homeland is going to care about him at all with the Cup going on. I was told that NBA is PPV in Germany anyway, but still.
It's not like people can't watch both, but I agree that NBA - and I'm a Spurs fan - can really be unbearable sometimes.

Chad's a soccer basher?
You've obviously never played his corner kick drinking game or been there where he compares Carlos Ruiz to his second wife, and Ruiz comes out looking better for it.

From Chad:
(What, you think soccer doesn't have fellas flopping, too? A soccer player gets tripped, then writhes in pain on the pitch, holding his ankle like it's shattered in four places. When Barbaro hurt his ankle -- yes, Barbaro, the Ronaldinho of the racetrack -- you didn't see him collapse like some cheap Italian striker. No. He stood his ground and gutted it out LIKE A MAN.)

Colin Cowherd had a good segment on his morning show today.
He said that the NBA Finals sound exciting vs. Bono lecturing us on the WC. Now I love the Bono spots -- but he makes sense in that we hardcore fans can relate and understand them whereas the average american sports fan could care less. He went on taking about how the glitz and glam is a big part of the sport in Europe and it is not here. He compared NBA wives and girlfriends to soccer players' -- Eva Longoria is a 6.5 maybe a 7 compared to soccer stars wives.
A good listen if you can find the first hour of his show.

(Here is ABC/ESPN's Hubie Brown, hypothetically, calling a soccer match: "You're down by a goal. You have no timeouts left. You must understand that you have to get the ball down the field and create a scoring opportunity. Now, you don't want to get trapped in the corners. You must rotate toward the goal mouth and you will need someone to step up and make a play.")
Anyone besides me think that sounds like something 'Celo would say? :)

Norm Chad needs to stop stealing Bill Simmons's schtick.
All I have to say is: Landon Donovan. TREMENDOUS UPSIDE POTENTIAL!

In high school my wife's family had a German exchange student. She states that they basically worship Dirk in Germany like they do Hasselhoff.

It's not PPV but it is a pay-cable (they call it sat, but it's a cable).
That said, having the b-ball package, i had no idea the playoffs were on.
BTW Footiel fans also have to have the sat sports package to see teams besides germany.

Took in my first (and LAST) NBA game last December in Philly. It was horrible. Boring! Who considers these freaks athletes at all? Seeing them live showed me what a pathetic bunch of clutzes play in the NBA. I think Iverson was the only guy who I'd call athletic out there that night and he phoned it in.

If I fall asleep (pass out) on the sofa after the last WC match of the day and wake up several hours later, and there is an NBA finals game on tv, and I can't quite reach the remote, and I don't feel like rolling over, and there is no pillow handy to cover my head, I'll be happy to watch the NBA..........

I don't think he cares, he's going to be watching it on Univision.

He puts even less value in it than you do.

Norman Chad continually takes cheap shots at MLS in his columns, and I don't think any soccer fan should respect anything he has to say.

Article is pointless to me.
First, I've sat through really bad Mavs season rooting for them, and have waited a long time to see them win it all. Second, if the USA isn't playing that night, I'll watch the NBA finals.
It would be a nice year in sports if Texas wins the National Championship in football, Mavs win the championship in bball, and the US gets out of the group and beats Brazil. That's all I ask for, is that so wrong?

As long as I don't have to choose between this Cup and Lord Stanley's.

Me thinks that, with the possible exception of the weekend, the WC will be on in the morning/early afternoon, the the NBA will be on in the evenings.
Crisis solved.
