Damn it Newsday. You don't need John Jeansonne to be writing your soccer articles when I have offered like 20 times already.....

I know writers typically don't write headlines or subheads, so it's not Jeansonne's fault, but I find it consistently laughable to see things like "US would do well to match '02 performance."

Given our group draw and the looming specter of Brazil in the Round of 16 unless we somehow win the group (which would be stunning in itself), if we match '02's performance, that's practically the equivalent of Brazil winning the Cup this summer.

I can't see how saying anything other than "If we get out of the group, that's a great Cup -- and even if we don't, but play very well in the process" is a reasonable position. As far as comparing this year to '02, we could outperform what we did in Korea and not even make the knockout stages.
