"The Red, White, Blue of England." Oh my. Even if they didn't know that England, Scotland, Wales, N. Ireland have different flags, all the writer of that piece would have had to do was watch one England game (or a clip from one). Or do a two minute google search. I'm always sort of amazed when I see things like that in big publications... it's really not that hard to get simple things right! Otherwise a pretty good article, though...

Does anyone have a sign on for the NY Times? I've been using bugmenot.com all day with no success.

This is why you can't mess with Bruce Arena:

``I have more confidence in our players than they do in themselves," Arena says. "A lot of them have an inferiority complex at the world stage. We gotta overcome that. I'm going there to win. I've got to make sure I've got 23 players that believe that."

Bring it!

Then he thinks of the movie "Dumb and Dumber" and lets out a laugh. At one point, Jim Carrey's character, Lloyd, asks the woman of his dreams what his chances are with her. One in a million, she replies. "So you're telling me there's a chance," Lloyd says.

"It's just like us," Arena says, pumping his fist, mimicking Lloyd. "If you tell me we have a one-in-a-million chance to win these games, that's good enough for me."

Inspiring. :)

Dude! For real! this is the Times covering at great length and quality the american game and its place in the game. And the only thing you can say is that they don't realize england flag is the saint georges cross. which I own one. We as soccer fans have become too paranoid for our own good. And it is totally deserved. We have struggled for this kind of coverage for a long time and we are now getting it yet we complain about a great peace because of the English flag. I thought the same thing when I read it but its time to let that go because the message the article is conveying is what at least I have been searching for since I started this passion in 86 for international soccer and 90 for American international soccer.

I feel like I want to go deeper into this article to discuss what it is talking about.

It is saying almost that the world is scared of us putting our mind to soccer. Because they know we will be very good if not dominant at it if we try. Really try as a country like every other country does. Yet at the same time they hope we do so that the entire world can be united through the venacular of soccer. think of how many times you have related life in some way through sports. whether it is baseball football basketball or hockey. You know that you can talk about the yankees red sox to define a certain feeling of rivalry and inferiority. Its almost as if the world wants the USA as a nation to have this same kind of dialogue.

Maybe I should just right a book on this subject.

I read it as the red, white, and blue of the England kit, and not the flag.

Great article...excellent work.

My favorite bit: "The glue binding all these qualities together is the perseverance and determination that Alex Ferguson, the coach of Manchester United, in England, has called "that American thing." It's a method of commitment that Jürgen Klinsmann, Germany's national-team coach, told me is born of optimism and confidence, of "how to deal with people, how to look at things, how to believe in yourself, how to focus on things and also to take risks, to say, 'Let's go for it.'"

I read it the same way.

Very good article...on a weekend where most US papers are writing one of 2 articles A) the sarcastic soccer article or B) hey, the USA is playing in the World Cup, let's tell you the names of Landon Donovan and Demarcus Beasley...I'd say that's a pretty good write-up.

I read this article yesterday and referenced it in another trend. Nonetheless, a great article. Also, their article on Ronaldinho and Brazil is worth reading. That link is: http://www.nytimes.com/2006/06/04/sports/playmagazine/04brazil.html?pagewanted=2&_r=1

good job by the Times. When they really want to cover something (not held back by out of touch editors), they can bloody cover it.
