Here's his FIFA bio (http://www.fifa.com/en/comp/refereedetails/0,2466,42758-CC-2003-5,00.html). A brief one at least.

He did the 2004 Copa America final.

2004-05 stats (http://www.soccerbase.com/refs2.sd?refid=678)

Lots of yellows in COMNEBOL qualifying and the Confed Cup.

Controversy in Copa Sudamerica final (http://www.coloradorapids.com/news/newsdetails.asp?ID=1549)

FIFA Confederations Cup France 2003
CAMEROON 1 : 0 TURKEY (http://www.fifa.com/en/comp/index/0,2442,70181,00.html?comp=CC&year=2003&articleid=70181)

Then, in time added on, Cameroon struck. Job burst into the box and was hauled to the ground just inside the area. Paraguayan referee Carlos Amarilla had no hesitation in pointing to the spot and Geremi side-footed home (91’).

2005 Friendly
GERMANY 4-3 AUSTRALIA (http://fifaworldcup.yahoo.com/06/en/050615/1/3vr3.html)

Germany finally took the lead for the third time in the match on the hour when Paraguayan referee Carlos Amarilla felt that Ljubo Milicevic's challenge on Friedrich was unfair and awarded a penalty kick. Ballack stepped up to the spot and sent Schwarzer the wrong way.

Amarilla was scheduled for our match in Jamaica in 2001 qualifying, the one in Jamaica on 6/16/01, but the listings at the CONCACAF site (http://www.concacaf.com/competitions_stats.asp?season=2002&code=1034&match=no3) have a different Paraguyan as the ref. I can't find a full match report.

All I know is that "amarilla" is Spanish for "yellow". I hope that's not an omen of sorts.

That's gold. :D

But looking at his record from the year before, 2004-05, seems a bit card-happy. Twenty-one of them in his final five matches of that year.

Obviously lives up to his name...

He is a huge soccer freak. Regardless, I don't like the thought of US playing the czechs with a yellow happy ref.

I don't know, but this sounds like the right kind of ref to have Clint Dempsey out there at least at some point.

Especially when Gooch even admits that because of his size he tends to get carded when others don't. Not a good development, but not much can be done about it at this point.

Of course, if he gives cards for simulation/diving, this could work in our favor against the Czechs.

If Gooch get carded marking Koller "because of his size" that's going to have to be some kinda bump.

Of course, anything can happen, but Czech is prolly the one match where Gooch will not look like a big hulking studmuffin towering over a hapless effete twinkletoes striker.

One good thing - I bet we have a lot more guys that can talk to this guy in Spanish than the Czechs do...

Agree. Dempsey and Beasley both draw fouls like a picnic draws ants.

Especially when Gooch even admits that because of his size he tends to get carded when others don't.yeah ... that would be quite a feat considering he'll be marking someone 3 inches taller than he is.

frankly, i for one, was not looking forward to the "European team + European soil + European referee" combination. i'm glad we have a south american ref for that game.

His Fifa bio says he also speaks English, so hopefully that bodes well for us. But I'm guessing Cech and Barros also speak English.
