HAMBURG, Germany - Bruce Arena and the U.S. soccer team quickly settled into the role of World Cup outsider. A few hours after arriving in Germany on Friday, the American coach was questioned on his policy of allowing families to spend time with players during the tournament at the team hotel, rather than have the squad sequestered in an isolated location, as many World Cup coaches choose to do.

Ching, who scored a goal in the 2-0 win over Venezuela, said: "Claudio is a huge player for us."When he's healthy and on the field he's the general. He's so good on the ball and so important to our team as far as possession goes."

Kammarman described the team’s state of mind as similarly ‘relaxed and focused’, emphasizing that there was ‘no nervous tension in this group’.

Who took these photos? Is the fact that Donovan and Wolff is in focus done intentionally?

I believe those were AP photos and yes, Donovan is purposely the only guy in focus. I don't think it makes a great photo but Drew Carey..er I mean, whoever took this photo seems to.:D

This photo is worrying. It would appear that Eddie Lewis is the only defender in the world that Josh is capable of getting past these days.;)

Cuz it's a slight thing called France '98  I really don't understand why other countries haven't figured this out. Ireland was isolated before Japorea and ended up kicking their captain off the team. I wonder which team is going to blow up this year b/c it isolated its players from civilization.

Minor notes:

- Ben Olsen is a lycanthrope. I swear the guy was clean shaven yesterday.
- Jimmy Conrad is "the Flash". Scary.

Below is part of the sad reality that faces the greatest team on earth. They had to bring in extra security to ward off autograph hunters and paparazzi...:p

It looks like Arena is keeping the guys really loose, which I think is very important at this stage.
