Hello all,
I would like to wear my US jersey during the flight to Germany. But this day in age with terrorists and our growing popularity, how safe is this? Any US fans going to wear their colors?
How about in the street or in the train? I am very sure that German security will be top notch, but I do remember a story of US fans surrounded by protestors in Korea on their way to the stadium.
Thanks,
Sandro

I wouldn't worry about a thing at all. If anything the people there will be impressed that you came all the way to support your team. This is what has happened to me all the times i have see then USA abroad (Ireland, Holland, France....)

I would be very worried about it! I have been here since 98 and never seen so much anti americian in my life. If you are around nuremberg, ktown you will be safer, but you can bet if you go to some other game (i am not going to mention who) I wouldnt wear anything that resemables anything USA: I am proud to be an American, but you will see it over here, pay close attention to the news. Anything negitive in the news toward us will be trouble. Stay alert and make sure you know where you are going. my 2 cents

It's absolutely no problem to wear your US jersey. In normal time, people in the street would not notice a US jersey. In the world cup, they'll probably think "this is a nice football fan who came from accross the ocean to spend his money in Germany. That's great" :) In France, american tourists are our favourite because they spend usually lots of money, I don't think why that would be different in Germany. Just avoid bad neighborhoods, but that's a recommendation I would give to any one.

I think you are far more likely to have a bar drunk start having a go about US foreign policy than anything else, but you can just walk away from that.
There will be tens of thousands of people about, not to mention loads of police. Safety in numbers will never seem truer. As anti-American as some might be, it's not as if a group of Guardian readers are going to be so overcome with seeing an American that they'll attack.

Lol. You're right when it comes to politics. But who cares for politics during the world cup?
Come here, wear your USA jersey (proudly ;)) and have a drink with us :) Germany is not Iraq. ;)

I am not concerned about safety for me, or my family from wearing US stuff.
In fact, in my experience, if someone does want to discuss politics I just join in the Bush-bashing (not a problem for me) I find it makes friends fast!

yeah don't worry about attacks or anythin like that. no offence or anythin but i think u r been more paranoic than worry, u know, its just world cup, everyone comes to cheer for their team and have a good time. i hardly doubt there would be any confrontations or attacks, unless ofcourse u talk bad about other teams or countries, then u might ask for problems.

The neighborhood I drive through everyday is worse than anything we'll see in Germany. Way to throw more fear the way of people trying to enjoy themselves. Do you work for Fox News by any chance?

Not fox news, but I am a US Soldier and not trying to put fear into anyone. I wouldnt worry too much about the games themselves, but any of the open air, or big pubs that are going to have the games going for folks that dont have tickets. There want be as much security at those places. I just want everyone to be safe and keep an eye out. too much of hitting the bottle can lead you to let your guard down and trust me you dont want that. We live in a diffrent world than before and I just want my brothers here to realise that and be safe. its better to talk about it than say nothing

It's all about the soccer and the celebration that goes with the event.I refuse to get caught up in the political babble. As for Mexico, they played wonderful soccer in the 2005 Confederations Cup.I hope they have a wonderful World Cup.As an American fan I hope to have a nice World Cup experience, with plenty of positive memories. If things get to bad ,I can always go party with the Brazilians. They have a good time win or lose(yeah,I know they usually WIN.)See you in Germany!

Let's keep things very narrowly focused on the safety issue. Thanks!

I've lived in Europe for about 10 years now and i've travelled all over with my USA stuff on - around the time of USA games and just random times. I've had ZERO problems ever.
This also includes almost 2 weeks of pretty much wearing a flag draped over me in France during the confederations cup.
I'd really be surprised if anything happened that was solely USA-related.
