Hi all
What would you guess my chances would be of getting into this game? If my girlfriend and I arrive in Hamburg early that morning, would you expect us to be able to find some kind soul near the stadium with two spare tickets they'll sell at face value? Or at the ticket centre from some late returns? Can you see it happening?
cheers
Rich

I'd say it's gonna be tough! This place is full of Americans and the Italians only have a short way to travel. But I guess it depends how much you're willing to pay.

Italians do not travel in large numbers, I went to two Italian games at euro 2004 against sweden and bulgaria both games the italians did not sell there full allocation and tickets were being sold at face value for the sweden game and under face value for the bulgaria game. This tournament may be different but if you look around i am sure you will pick up tickets for a reasonable price.

You will get tickets on game day 100%, you might have to pay a little mark up but not as much as you think. You can get two category 3 tickets for 100-120 Euros for the pair which is not a bad deal.

I got 3 tickets to that game and if things dont go good for the USa and ghana, that game is going to be meaningless and I would almost be willing to give up those tickets. Wont know till were there though.

Well let me know if this is the case. I'm just really interested to see these top players live. For what it's worth, I fully expect one of the teams to be fighting for survival.

Since Euro 2004 was in Portugal, the Italian presence might not have been huge. But you can be sure that they will show up in huge numbers in Germany, which is easily reachable compared to Portugal.
The Italian liking to German beer is just another incentive to head northwards. (The October fest arena is usually surrounded by trailers and caravans from bella italia:))
Besides that, Hamburg is just ~6 hours away from Prague! So, the Czech supporters would surely be there in full strength.

It's not in Italian football culture to travel abroad and watch the national team. Even at home games their support is pitiful. Reason is, the club fans hate each other so much that they don't bother teaming up to support the national team. There will be more Czechs than Italians I reckon, as the Czechs have only a short distance to travel. As for getting tickets, no problem. As kick-off gets nearer, tickets are becoming cheaper by the minute from touts, the later you leave it the better. You may get some for a real cut price, less than face value perhaps.

what if the crowds have thinned by then and they start checking passports though? Am I right to want to try to get into the ground when things are at their busiest, or is that not something to worry about?

When I was at the Euro in Portugal I was talking to some fans from Italy. They told me that the national team doesnt get much support outside of the country because of the hatred between the club teams. For example, Juve fans hate Milan fans and vice versa, and they dont come together for the national team. The Juve fans will praise Del Piero while the Milan fans will praise Nesta (for example). They will just continue to fight so when they travel they just travel in bunches from the club level (so a pack of Juve fans will travel together even for the national team). It is silly, but what can you do.
