Well the Kurpfalz selection was made up of Regionalliga and Oberliga players so some of those players earn their living by playing soccer. It's still a shamefull result to lose 2:3 although I think Costa Rica fielded a B-team.

B-team? You guys misunderstand the meaning of this word... We had a B-team in Poland for some time and it had a completely different rooster and a different coach comparing to the national team while here it was the first team of Costa Rica that lost to those amateurs... OK, maybe they fielded some subs, but still those subs are among the best 23 players of Costa Rica...

It is really shamefull now we know who isnt in the starting lineup or even playing. They gave no effort what so ever:confused:

The only positive I can find for Costa Rica is that in 1974 the Polish team lost against a 2nd league Polish team 2-0 right before the WC was starting. They went on take 3rd place, friendlies, even against amateurs, don't mean much. Unless you get your ass whooped in the group, then everyone will pile on saying the writing was on the wall with that loss to an amateur team.:p

The guys were from 3rd and 4th German league teams
(not from 11th or 12th league),
that are no pub players, but (semi)professionals, who
earn money with football as LGW already said.
Sure, a win is espected for a NT,
but results in such games are not very important.
WC starts in one week, then the results count, not now.

These players were amateurs. You wont find many pros or even semi-pros in 3rd league and literally none in 4th league.
But it might just have been a red herring (hehe, funny phrase)...

3rd league in Germany is actually of a very high level for being as third league. As far as i know, the players in that league play football fulltime as jobs.
Obviously, that doesn't excuse the result.

The players are from third and fourth german league, which is pretty good quality (I know because I played myself in the fifth league and we had teams down from the fourth, which were difficult to beat).
But it is no way true professional, semiprofessional at most!
So far I know, this was a pure students team, precisely german students champions this year.

Another advantage semi-pro and amateur teams have is that of chemistry. Most semi-pro and high level amateur teams I've played against have a great team spirit and work for each other...a product of playing together for years, free of big money transfers. And the coaches are very loyal to players.
Still though, a shameful result. The best my amateur team has ever done was to draw with Fiorentina's Primavera youth side 2-2. And with my semi-pro team we once lost to Colorado Rapids reserves 5-0...

You'll be able to watch Costa Rica's real fooball level starting June 9. In Italy 90 (Costa Rica's last -and only European WC) Costa Rica was beaten by the worst teams they could find during their concentration weeks before the tournament. WC results: CR 1 Scotland 0; CR 2 Sweden 1; CR 0 Brazil 1... Those matches are for the coach to draw his squemes. Of course Germany is favorite for the game, but don't right CR off because of these recent performances...

For future reference do not give away scores or imply a victor/loser in the title of the thread. You need to use "R" for result.

True enough, but in this case here the players were not from one team, they were chosen from different amateur teams. They were assembled just for this match. So no team chemistry excuse here.
