Czech Republic midfielder Vladimir Smicer will miss the World Cup due to a hamstring injury.

"We came to a conclusion that, unfortunately, my condition makes it impossible for me to travel to the World Cup and help the team," Smicer told the Associated Press.

A replacement had not yet been made.

Losing the 32-year-old Bordeaux star should affect the talented Czech side, as he has scored 27 goals in 81 matches. He was hoping to recover from the injury, which has kept him out since originally injuring it back in February, but was simply unable to get healthy in time for the World Cup.

Hmm... The Czech team looking weaker and weaker with every day.

Bad news for the Czechs, certainly would have been good to see him play. But still obviously not enough for the US or anyone else to bank on.
Brueckner already had some of Smicer's potential replacement players in camp (according to Soccernet) and the Czechs still have Rosicky, Nedved, Baros, and Koller to rely on for goals and creativity -- still pretty formidable, even if some of them are coming off of injuries. Czechs are still going to go all out on June 12 - especially since 1st place in this group more or less ensures avoiding Brazil in round 2.

With that said, CZR - USA should be a cracking good game :D

No he's suspended. He got a daft sending off against Senegal at the CAN in Egypt for confronting Habib Beye and received a four match international ban from the CAF which has put him out of the World Cup.

Italy lost Aimo Diana, who would've made the team if he wasn't injured. They also lost Vieri, but that's a good riddance.
