Though the gala (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/world_cup_2006/4609926.stm) that was supposed to have replaced the usual opening ceremony had since been cancelled, will there still by any kind of opening ceremony? If so, will it be televised here in the U.S.?

The starter of this thread (http://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?t=347287) suggests that there will be an Opening Ceremony. (See last paragraph of first post)

Univision has traditionally televised the Opening Ceremony in the past although they didn't four years ago.
Univision begins its June 9 broadcast one hour before Germany-Costa Rica kicks off, so the possibility is there that they may show it.
ESPN won't as they're scheduled to go on five minutes before kick off. Likewise TV5.
Setanta Sports is listed as going on air right at kickoff.

Thanks for the info, unclesox. :)

It's too bad that Univision doesn't have an HD channel... or at least it doesn't on Comcast. :(

As a matter of fact, who knows whether or not Comcast will carry ESPN2-HD, even if just temporarily for the World Cup...

"WC Show"?
15:15?!

Well, traditionally the Opening Ceremony has only lasted approx 45 min-1 hour.

According to german magazine SportBILD the ceremony will look like that:

16:25 Start of the ceremony
Show act (~20 minutes)
Perhaps a gig by Bono (U2) and/or Youssou N'Dour (popular musician in Afrika)
Presentation of the trophy with 139 former WC Winners
Horst Köhler, Federal President of Germany, opens the tournament
Song: Grönemeyer - Zeit, dass sich was dreht
Song: Il Divo&Toni Braxton - Time of our lives
Crazy BS-User Moonsault running naked over the pitch
17.00 The End

FIFA.com suggested that German chancellor Angela Merkel would open the tournament, followed by a welcome speech by Horst Köhler.
Not that it really matters to me. :)

As for that guy running onto the pitch, "WHO ATE ALL THE PIES?!" :p
