My #1 choice is Philadelphia Independence, obviously I'm on the PA side of the river. But if the powers that be decide that it would be best to not have Philadelphia or NJ in the name then my choice is definitely Independence SC.

Just my 2 cents

Thanks to all who are working hard to gather the appropriate data to present to the inevstors!!

quick question...didnt someone say earlier that the name athletic was copyrighted? will this pose any problems if it is chosen as the team name?

As far as I know, Athletics is copyrighted - not sure if Philadelphia Athletic FC/SC could be thus far.

Even if it is, the owner would be the owner of the Oakland A's, who recently signed a memorandum of understanding with MLS. So it shouldn't be a problem.

what was in that memorandum? anything about the name?

The memorandum of understanding included stadium related awarding of a team to the Bay Area, but the assumption is that another MLS owner would view it as a trademark issue, noting that the Athletics franchise has strong roots here and that it is part of local lore would be more generous in "sharing" the variation of the name.

My Dads's Great-Uncle played for a season or two with the old Philadelphia Athletics (under Connie Mack!) in the early years of the twentieth century -- it would be very cool to see a variation of that nickname resurrected.

I don't think there's an issue if they're different sports and cities.

IIRC, The KC Wiz had to occupy that name while the Delaware Wizards (div III) granted them permission to use the full word since Delaware had the copyright for the professional soccer team name. But the Washington Wizards (NBA) never needed to get permission from either KC or Delaware.

Now if the Philadelphia Athletics were to be green and yellow and have a elephant as a mascot, the Oakland A's may have an issue. But if they were Philadelphia Athletic, it shouldn't be an issue at all.

Why anyone would consider something other than Philadelphia Athletic is beyond me? I love the way it sounds (very "football" sounding) and the connection to the old Phildelphia Athletics baseball team is nice.

Possibly because they don't want to sound like they are trying to be like a baseball team and create their own identity for the team. Course I picked Athletic because it is the best of the names up there.

Perhaps because the team won't actually play in Philadelphia (at least not permanently).

If there's a city for whom "Athletic" belongs in the name of the soccer team, it's Philadelphia. Philadelphia Athletic is classy, IMO, and it resonates with sports history in Philadelphia and soccer history abroad.

Independance SC sounds okay, too if there's a problem with NJ.

I know it's late to get it into polls, but what about "Independance Athletic" as a compromise on all counts? Metros have already set the "no city" precedent in MLS, and if Independance and Athletic are both popular, it could be a win-win by sidestepping location names and doubling up on history.

Lets not forget guys, Bryan and company will turn into Milestone a list of the favorite names, not just one final answer. They are interested in what we are like not a final name for them to run down to the copyright office with.

They don't...yet. Milestone, the Philly MLS investment group that is also potentially helping Rowan University build a soccer stadium in Glassboro, NJ asked a few of us here on BS to get a list to them of fan favorite colors and team names.

I'm happy with all of these choices actually, unlike the final colors.

If this is going be considered THE Philly team (i.e., there will be no other Philly-based team further down the pipeline), then I like Phila Independence. Athletic is a little generic from the perspective of today's fan.

If this is more of a South Jersey team (and a Philly team could emerge in the future) then I say brand them Jersey. Go ahead and give them a regional identity. I was never a fan of calling NJ/NY's team "the Metrostars."

yeah...but there is a tiny bit of history of Philly Athletic in the ASL isn't there? I think more of our "new" teams should revisit ASL names.

Probably a bit too late for this, since you guys are in your final round of voting, but there used to be a Philadelphia FC, way back when...

Oh, and just to add to the discussion, I'm pretty sure the copyright would only pertain to Athletics (plural), but Philadelphia Athletic (as in Athletic Club) should be alright. Unless some judge views it as being too similar, but in all honesty, I don't see how or why.
