I particularly enjoyed the 2 sentence informational session on the Cote d'Ivoire civil war: "North vs South; really really bad feelings between the two . . . " Thanks for the clarification there, guys; I totally have a sense of it now.
What's better is that is all they appeared to know about the country, which means they had to mention it at least every two minutes to avoid actually talking about the match. Lord knows what would happen if these announcers were forced to talk soccer for more than a few seconds at a time. Most of them just seem to be crossing off the days until they can get back to America to talk about basketball and baseball.

It's just that everything is poor -- match commentary, color commentary, background and biography, rules of the game, player names pronunciation ("Hine-zee"). Hell, even the audio and video weren't synched properly for the entire match!! I mean, I know its US coverage of soccer, but at least synch the video. [/rant]

Maybe they should have gotten Dickie V and John Madden to do the commentary. :D :D

What the hell was with the color guy? He was trying to be the effing Dick Vitale of the World Cup: "O baby, that should have been a penalty!"
Trying to imitate the Spanish-speaking commentators' passion?
I liked how Shep Messing used other sports for analogies to explain soccer stuff to the newbies.

Really? I found that to be annoying as hell. I was like dude you can't compare this game to Game 7 of a World Series.

The broadcast teams(and pop up graphics) for ESPN are awful. Univision is much better.

Australia - Japan (result, highlight to reveal): 26'- Schwarzer gets fouled on a chip into the box, no call, it goes into the net, 1-0 to Japan. 84' - Tim Cahill levels. 89'- Cahill with a second. 90+2'- Aloisi puts it away. Australia 3 - 1 Japan.

Yes, let's blame the Red Devils fan. Jinx!
On the bright side, at the bar I was at there was this cute blonde waitress sporting a Newcastle kit. I complimented her. She may or may not have any idea about the club. I say that cuz most people who see the old school kits with the Broonale logo on it think it's a promo shirt for Newcastle the beer and not a soccer team jersey.
