One thing's for sure. If you strike the ball flush and on target, odds are it's going to be a goal. That thing knuckles like nothing else.

He's not fully fit yet and Paraguay obviously weren't going to challenge, even with England being completely shiite.

Watching England sometimes disappoints me, like the anticipated matchup between them and Argentina in WC02 was major letdown. Paraguay looked lackadaisal. Hopefully the next match will be better.
Man, this is awesome: a day filled with soccer with an hour break in between to eat, drink or do whatever.

The players aren't but the tactics they use are easily beatable by a good side. The central midfield has two of the best players in the world but they don't play together. In the 2nd half Paraguay owned the midfield.

Anyone think England is a tad overrated?Ding ding ding! I'm not at all suprised by the game today. Of course, England will win their group, but in a slightly more difficult group, I don't know.
I hope Sven is the problem, because that's shortly fixable. It's like they have all the talent in the world, and don't show up for the games.

Anyone think England is wayyyyy overrated without the football God Wayne Rooney on the pitch?
FYP... ;) :D

I think it was just tactical to preserve Owen and keep Rooney on the bench as well, as Paraguay never looked like levelling. With Owen and Rooney up front the side will be vastly improved. No knock against Crouch's skill level, but he was pants today. The lack of service from midfield made both strikers nonexistent.
Hargreaves for Cole was a more baffling switch to me than was Downing for Owen. Cole was easily the best player on the pitch for either side, but again that's just a conservative approach from Eriksson I guess, using defense to see off the match. England should open it up a little more against Trinidad and Tobago, and the final match against Sweden still might shape the group, so it's likely to be balls to the wall there. The first match is all about feeling your way through it, especially when they're playing an opponent they should be able to (and did) beat on a bad day.
On a related note: How about the Soca Warriors, eh?

Solid play by Hislop (who also was with NUFC back in the day). Had no idea he went to college in the States. If Cornell Glen (Galaxy represent!) had not hit that crossbar, that would've been a massive goal.

It's amazing how Sven is so conservetive with such good attacking players. Imagine England with Guus Hiddink or Wenger at the helm.

That's the sort of hard hitting analysis you can expect from ESPN during the WC.

How about the breakdown on a yellow card and a red cards?I particularly enjoyed the 2 sentence informational session on the Cote d'Ivoire civil war: "North vs South; really really bad feelings between the two . . . " Thanks for the clarification there, guys; I totally have a sense of it now.

What the hell was with the color guy? He was trying to be the effing Dick Vitale of the World Cup: "O baby, that should have been a penalty!"
