Hey guys, with the new and always improving technology we deal with these days, and the upcoming world cup, i wanted to know how you guys are going to be recording your games, or the best ways you suggest. With vcr quickly becoming obsolete, poeple are turning to dvr or tivo. If you are familiar with any of these new types of tech, then please let me know which is the most user friendly. I am trying to find a piece of hardware that can record the games (we we all have work during the games ;) ) And after recording be able to convert them to my computer so i can archive them. If you have any tips or suggestions please post them. THanks guys.

No need to convert them to your computer when you can record them directly to it.
I use a Hauppauge PVR-350 so I can watch what I record on the TV as well.

That is awesome news!! It is from your DVR that you are uploading the material from? I have a comcast HD DVR and was hoping to do this but haven't heard anyone say its possible until seeing your post.

Will the pinnacle USB capture device connect the Comcast DVR with a Mac or PC?

Thanks

I actually get DVR through my cable company. Its a pretty sweet deal- its like 20 bucks more a month and i get an HD reciever and DVR box. If you have cable you should ask if they have something similar. I always record shows when I cant watch them live. Since its basically a cable box with DVR in it i can set it up to record an entire season (or all the cup games) just by hitting a button. Its very convenient and I'll never go back to the "old" way of watching tv.

BTW, Im new to BigSoccer. I live in DC and work in marketing (pretty cool, I get a bunch of free stuff from clients). Made the move over to bigsoccer when espn.com has no coverage of the WC on their message boards.

I have the same question, how can you copy the games you have stored in your HD dvr to a DVD or PC? The games I have stored in my dvr are in HD quality and I'd like to archive them in HD. any help is greatly appreciated.

Ha!!!!!! You call that a sweet deal?!?!

If you got your own HD DVR with a cablecard slot, it would free you from the stupid $20 extra per month, and you wouldn't be at the mercy of your cable company's DVR bugs, maintenance issues etc. Your cable company may charge a small fee - of the order of $5 per month - for HD tuner usage or something like that. So, it's a drop of $15 per month, if you can shell out one-time upfront cost of owning the HD-DVR. But wait, there is more!

The best advantage of a cablecard is, you can only get digital cable tiers a-la-carte without having to pay for Expanded Basic. I do exactly that.

I already have satellite with HD. But there is little bit of content I can only get through my local cable (HD as well as SD). I can only get those digital cable tiers a-la-carte with a cablecard, keep my satellite and not have to shell out a fortune for duplicate content. It's great to have control of an a-la-carte cablecard and your own HD-DVR.

If it is HD content, keeping it on the DVR is the best option, provided your hard disk doesn't crash. Copying to a DVD is guaranteed to have loss in picture quality, going from HD to SD. Until there is a Blu-Ray recorder or HD-DVD recorder, the best bet to preserve HD content is to keep it on the hard disk.

With SD content, you can freely copy it to DVDs.

I am waiting for an answer to this question as well.

I have a DirecTv Tivo and it is my understanding that you CANNOT export video to a PC, ONLY to VHS.

Is this correct?
