Great reading, a couple to note:

1. Arena, on JOB's health: "He's still not ready to play 90 minutes in a World Cup match," Arena said. But, with three more weeks of preparation available, Arena added that he was optimistic about O'Brien's chances.

"Maybe he won't be in the same role as the last World Cup, but hopefully he's going to be able to play," Arena said.

DMB, on playing against Nedved and Nesta: The USA's first-round opponents will feature plenty of well-known stars, but Beasley says it takes just one move to beat out the Czech Republic's Pavel Nedved or Italy's Alessandro Nesta.

"They're not gods. They're not invincible," he says.

From the NJ.com Red Bull piece (http://www.nj.com/business/ledger/index.ssf?/base/business-3/1148363477317610.xml&coll=1&thispage=2):

De Grandpre didn't spend a lot of time celebrating, especially since attendance at the two most recent games returned to last year's sparse levels -- 3,630 for the April 22 game against D.C. United, which took place in freezing downpour, and 4,648 for the May 13 game against Chicago.

Hmm, 3,630 and 4,648? MLS.net reported 8,475 and 8,712 respectively.

Attendance according to MLSNet:

April 22: 8,475
May 13: 8,712

But the attendance reported in the article for the 5/20 game against Chivas is the same as the one reported by MLS: 9,573

I knew MLS cooked the attendance numbers, but I thought it was interesting to see discrepancies like this showing up in the Star Ledger.

TRANSPARENCY NOW! :(You're aware of the concept of "turnstile count" and "tickets distributed", no? Probably not, I would imagine. That's one for the Newbie FAQ, IMO...

It's interesting that the has got what looks like the turnstile count for those games. Since I doubt Red Bull themselves would do it, I wonder if it's the NJSEA trying to make the club/league look bad for trying to actually leave the Swamp in the first place.

no, we don't know that the islanders do

none of us know how they are reporting their numbers... we've been given a couple of numbers for the red bull games... we can assume what they mean

but that doesn't tell us how they relate to the islander attendace numbers

who else would the numbers come from? The article doesn't say specifically. We know they don't come game summaries, it doesn't make sense that De Grandpre would give them turnstile counts, unless RB are lobbying for something, and I'm not sure the NJSEA could give the turnstile count without getting themselves in trouble, contractually. Maybe the SL had a in game head-count project going on for each game for their own smear campaign...
