Anywho, here's a q:
We're all talking about this '1' CM who we're gonna get, but over a campaign it's the strength of the unit of 4 CM's that will be telling. In an ideal world, as we play a 4-4-2, we'd need 2 starters and 2 on rotation.
As a foursome, who would you like to see in those roles?
i.e
Scholes
O'Shea
Fletcher
Giggs
.....
or somesuch. Pick a realistic foursome for us that you'd like to see next season.

Carrick
New 'at the right price' DCM (could Gago be got cheaply? South American football coverage here is non-existent)
Scholes
Jones
---
In a 4-4-2, Carrick & Scholes for weaker, bunker opposition, Carrick and new DM if we will be facing a tough midfield battle against a 4-4-2 team, and new DM, Carrick and Jones in a 4-3-3 against stronger midfields that play a 4-3-3 (since I think we really began to fully grasp the 4-3-3 at times this late season, like against Bolton). Give Carrick & Jones games gainst weaker sides that play actual football (e.g. Charlton) and if that works, give them a few slightly tougher games to test them as I think this may be our full-time 'partnership of the future'. I am assuming Fletcher will be loaned out.

You need four new midfield players then.
Giggs & Scholes are not what they were - retire them both?
O'Shea is awful
Fletcher has some promise
Smith?

Scholes and Jones to cover attacking mid.
(pick one: Mascherano, Diarra, Gattuso, Carrick, etc.) and O'Shea to cover defensive mid.

"Mr. Pink"
Scholes
New ACM
Smith
D. Jones (potentially higher, as I've only seen minimal amounts of his play so far)

You need a quality DM - Keane has left, Djemba-Djemba didnt work out, Smith is a striker
Rooney as an AM? Although that would be a waste
Fact is you have nothing worthwhile in the middle of the park
Park? lots of energy, but a utility player/sub,
Fletcher? utility player and sub also
Giggs? Not good enough to be a CM and too slow for the wings these days
Scholes? Done.
bottom line is that you need a total overhaul in midfield.

Scholes? Done.
Wrong.
bottom line is that you need a total overhaul in midfield.
Now try again in the real world where teams can't spend indeterminate amounts of money.

Anyhow, my realistic four..
Scholes
Jones
Diarra

Just to let you know, I feel that the glazers will fufil their promise and give Fergie money to buy whatever is needed to compete with Chelsea.

He played 45 mins in the season's final game against Charlton, and looked good overall, so I think its fair to assume he'll be ready for a full season.

Scholes is not done yet. In the 4-5-1 he looked awful because he is quite a specific player with regards to what formation he is played in, and how he is used. In the brief time we returned to the 4-4-2 prior to his being injured this year, Scholes looked like he was getting back to his best. He was also one of our best players in the 45 minutes he played against Charlton... in the 4-4-2. Also, the fact that Scholes not only has done so well without relying on athletic ability, but has actually done so in spite of his pretty large deficiencies in that regard, means that he could play for a few years more.
We also have David Jones coming back, who looked superb in Holland and has been superb for us at every level thus far. His spell at Preston also helped him develop his physique, as he (like almost all of our youngsters) was pretty slight in build before that. With him and Scholes, I think we have our creative CM/AM position sorted.
We desperately need somebody to play the holding role, though. Like I said, Carrick and a good, established player under about 26-28 years of age without having to spend too much (and no, it doesn't need to be a Diarra) would be ideal, imo.
- And btw, I don't consider what you have said thus far to be trolling. If you continue to conduct yourself in the manner you have thus far, which has been respectful to both our players and posters in tone, feel free to carry on posting here.
