It seems that many of us are in the same boat as far as not having ESPN2HD. I think we should start a blitz to ESPN directly asking them to switch the 1st US match to ESPN instead of ESPN2....

Kills me I spent all this $$ on an HDTV and I won't be able to see the US - Czech game in High Def

If you get them to switch it, you better do it before I leave for Germany and have set up my recording!

I really don't want to get home and find two hours of Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee waiting for me.

Good idea but its not gonna happen for several reasons. The biggest is that ESPN is using this as leverage against the major cable companies that have refused to add ESPN2HD to do so -- agreeing to the change would give those folks much less reason to add the channel so I seriously doubt ESPN would even consider it (though I applaud your effort).

But the high-def broadcast of the spelling bee lets you see all the worry lines forming on those 12-year-old faces.

Or the occasional typo on the placards they wear, which is always amusing. I think if they misspell your hometown, you should get a mulligan.

BTW, Andy, do you have an HD DVR? If so, how is it and how much was it?

No. I have a video capture card in my computer and a really large hard drive. My HD satellite box outputs NTSC. I'm looking for the widescreen version more than the HD version.

You could've gotten DISH or DirecTV only for the duration of the World Cup (in addition to whatever setup you have right now, and without doing any long term commitment with the satellite guys) and then cancel it. If you already spent so much money on HD setup, this extra expense would be like peanuts. You can get free satellite installations (at least with DISH, don't know about DirecTV) even without any commitment. And if you don't spend on a HD-DVR, instead just a HD receiver, it's a pretty cheap deal. Even with a HD-DVR, if you buy it, it will fetch very good value on eBay.

Of course, the net result is it would cost some more money. But if it's so much worth to you, the cost is something to evaluate.

Hey, if the game turns out on ESPNHD I'm sure someone can make you a widescreen DVD of it. Good luck in Germany, btw.
