Please select your favorite name for Philly MLS. This is a public poll.

There seems to be a missing option in the poll. Wonder what it could be...

Sorry Matt, I took the votes that had received the most write in or vote support same as the color scheme. Despite the logic of having a team playing in Jersey named Jersey, it did not gain support on these boards.

Please write in your candidate name and if it generates the kind of buzz the SC movement or the Philadelphia Athletic movement did it will be included in the next round. I did include other as a vehicle in this poll. In the color poll the write ins were nil and the vote was pretty straight forward, all of the 5 included in round two received at least 10%.

It would be ironic to have 2 teams playing in NJ and both identified by city names from other states.

I didn't include a suggestion for the nickname portion because I haven't thought of one yet. I'd prefer an "American style" name, but I don't have a particular preference. As long as it's not dumb it's fine with me.

I'm happy to see "SC" in the poll rather than "FC." Sensible. :)

To echo Matt B.'s thoughts, it does seem odd to have a Philadelphia forum on BS with, of course, a majority of Philly-based fans (outnumbering N.J. fans by at least 3-1) who live in Philly vote for the team name of South-Jersey based MLS team. Naturally, they are going to go with Philly names, yet such results seem a bit provincial and unrepresentative of the desires of those who actually live in the area where the team will be based. Not to get too far off topic, but perhaps a N.J.-only fan based poll would give the owners a better sense of what is on the minds of those in the immediate community?

Anyway, my write in name (an American style one):
1) N.J. Atlantic

I think it would be best to take the NJ/Philly debate back to the "What Should We Name it Thread". I agree that the argument that you and Matt make is valid BUT would Rowan have the support needed if they weren't in one of the biggest metropolitan areas in the US that happens to be named Philadelphia? A SNJ only poll wouldn't yield as many votes as the number of potential supporters of the team who will be active in it's support.

One last bit on this from me - the ratio that you mention is equal to the population ratio and potentially the fan base, why should the 1 have more of a voice than the three? When it comes down to it, Milestone is in it for the money - will they alienate more potential fans with Philadelphia or New Jersey - would they do better to leave both names out of it - will anybody care except for the 80 of us on bigsoccer voting?

I do like Philadelphia Athletic but can understand why people don't want a euro rip off. Anyone who voted for Independance care to speak to why they like it?

part of why I like independence sc is because its not constricting to any one part of the region...now that might not have been the intention of whoever posted it, they may have thought philly or SJ independence sc, but I think the name alone without the regional aspect is great.

Yes and no. While Independence SC is a snappy name, do keep in mind that the Declaration of Independence was signed 23 miles away in another city and different state, so it does have Philadelphia connotations. If we had to choose from that list, though, I find Atlantic SC incredibly good -- it's inclusive to all and has no geographic distinctiveness.

Can anyone name one professional team in this country (or Canada) that doesn't have geographic connotations?

I think that's kind of important.

I don't have geographical omission, but I do have two geographical generalizations.

Carolina Panthers - play in Charlotte, NC - but to attract South Carolinians left the name as Carolina

Carolina Hurricanes - play in Raleigh, NC - but to attract South Carolinians left the name as Carolina

This is the best example of regional dis-specification that I can think of. I was in NC when they got the Panthers and deciding to name them Carolina and then play the first season in SC was a huge deal. Many folks thought the team should be Charlotte or North Carolina.

See also Tenn. Titans

The flip side of this is the re-god damn-diculous Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Originally named LA Angels, became California Angels, became Anaheim Angels, became a symbol meaning Disney loves us, then became the Los Angeles Angeles and were sued to add of Anaheim. This should be avoided at all costs.

I was interested to see that if the team were to be named Philadephia Athletic, it wouldn't be the first team besides the baseball team to use the name or a version of it.

From nfl.com 1902
Baseball's Philadelphia Athletics, managed by Connie Mack, and the Philadelphia Phillies formed professional football teams, joining the Pittsburgh Stars in the first attempt at a pro football league, named the National Football League. The Athletics won the first night football game ever played, 39-0 over Kanaweola AC at Elmira, New York, November 21. All three teams claimed the pro championship for the year, but the league president, Dave Berry, named the Stars the champions. Pitcher Rube Waddell was with the Athletics, and pitcher Christy Mathewson a fullback for Pittsburgh. The first World Series of pro football, actually a five-team tournament, was played among a team made up of players from both the Athletics and the Phillies, but simply named New York; the New York Knickerbockers; the Syracuse AC; the Warlow AC; and the Orange (New Jersey) AC at New York's original Madison Square Garden. New York and Syracuse played the first indoor football game before 3,000, December 28. Syracuse, with Glen (Pop) Warner at guard, won 6-0 and went on to win the tournament.

hey there's first time for everything...its a catchy and innovative name, Im stickin to it.

the Declaration of Independence was signed 23 miles away in another city and different state, so it does have Philadelphia connotations.

I thought the name had more to do with the concept of US independence than the document itself, which you could argue is regionally broader that just the event of its signing.
