This should be interesting. Probably too late to change anything for Euro 2008, so we may see their debut in the 2010 qualifiers.

yet another small small state...
don`t like it, hope that this is not a new trend in europe. The costs - the public expenses - of it will be exorbitant. And regarding to european or world soccer tournaments the matches will loose their qualities...

Well since there are no other commonwealths in Europe at the moment, I don't think, it's not going to happen. It's not exactly a trend.

Montenegro hasn't had de facto relations with Serbia since 1996 and it has been economically independant since then using the Euro as it's currency.

If this keeps up, we'll end up with 10 countries in each qualifying group.

It was expected given the fact the smallish independence the country has had for sometime from Serbia after the breakup of Yugoslavia. I always felt it was a matter of 'when' rather than 'if'.

This would hurt the SCG football team quite a lot. Some of their players are Montenegrins or of Montengrin origin and a lot of their young stars are from Montenegro or have Montengrin roots. But the prospect of them splitting into two new teams competing for honours may not happen for a while just yet. Probably for the WC 2010 I would image. They will use 2008 to get adjusted to things. The 2008 team in the qualifiers will be occupied by Serbia. Despite Buducnost, Smederevo and Zemun haven just been relegated to the 2nd division in the Serbian league, certainly this is one new UEFA member that could make some waves.

Mirko Vučinić, the young Leece striker is Montengrin. He could well be leading the line of the new team.

However, it could well depend on how nationalistic some of the current players are. Some could decide to stay on (a la most of the other Former Yugoslav teams) or jump ship to play for their homeland.

Should prove to be quite exciting in the coming few years.

I also bet you £10 that Savicevic will manage them.

How will this affect the Serbian league? does Montenegro have the infrastructure to support their own league?

this could end up affecting Champions League & UEFA Cup spots too

I think 3 of the Montengrin teams have been relegated. The current league is restructing at the minute which as a result is affecting how its been restructed.

Its all a question on how quickly the FA is setup, admitted to Fifa and UEFA and a league is organised. For the next season - the league will remain the same and the Montegrin sides will stay in the league as well compete as Serbian teams.

Zemun, Smederevo and Budućnost have been relegated - but both Zemun and Smederevo will stay in the top flight for next season as a result of the political changes.

I imagine 2007/08 will see the first Montenegrin league take place...

The 2nd level of the Serbia-Montenegro league system is already split in a Serbian and a Montenegran league, so it will be quite easy to have a seperate Montenegran leagues next season. They just have to add the Montenegran team(s) currently in the 1st level of Serbia-Montenegro to the existing 2nd level Montenegro league.

I can't imagine that Montenegran teams would be without league football for a year, allthough it might be the case that the champion of 2006/07 won't be able to qualify for the CL if Montenegro isn't a official member yet of UEFA(?).

Montenegro and Serbia will have separate leagues in next season already.
I don't think Montenegro's independence will have big influence in our(Serbian) football. They have few tallented players, and they will be definitly the best "small" country. But they have only 2 of 23 players in NT, so I dont think Serbia will miss them a lot.

What will happen to the Montenegrins who are on the Serbian team? They would be capped, therefore they wont be able to play for another national team. Or would FIFA make an exemption and allow them to move and play for a Montenegrin team?

The 3 Montenegrin sides in the 2005/2006 Serbia-Montenegro first division have been: FK Zeta Golubovci (5th), FK Budućnost Podgorica (14th) and FK Jedinstvo Bijelo Polje (16th). FK Zemun (from Serbia) finished 10th and because FK Zeta will leave they won't be relegated anymore.

They will be able to play for Montenegro, just like when the USSR and Yugoslavia broke up. It's the same land they'll be representing, so it's not really a different country. Montenegro was part of Sebia & Montenegro.

They had two fantastic players in the 90s savićević and mijatović,it’s hard to expect that they’ll have two such players at the same time again.

One of them is golakeeper(Jevric), but he will play for Serbia for sure. Also I heard that Mirko Vucinic will play for Serbia also, becouse he can't wait 2010. to play WC and he is not sure that Montenegro will go there. In his interest is to play on WC and EC now, not when he become old. Only Simon Vukcevic said he would like to play for Mont., and also some players which will never find the place in Serbia squad like Brnovic(Nenad and Bojan), Srdjan Radonjic, Igor Burzanovic, Purovic...

After this world cup, Serbia will most certanly try to work out with shift of generations. Part of players that will leave are Milosevic, Krstajic, Djordjevic, Nadj and probably Jevric. Even now we have better goalkeeper than him - Vladimir Stojkovic. He is amazing GK and he is only 23! If you watched Serbia&Montenegro U21 or Red Star matches you now what I'm talking about. He was voted Best Youth Goalkeeper in Europe in 2005, and the reason he is not our first GK now is that Jevric started qualifications on our goal, things went well, he recieved only one goal in 10 matches, and coach Petkovic doesn't like to change things even if its obvious he should do so.
P.S.
But Montenegro has better youth attackers than Serbia - Vucinic and Purovic.

Like I said Vucinic will play for Serbia and Purovic sucks.

Purovic je ocajan igrac, nije ni do kolena Nikoli Zigicu po igri!
