I'm sure some of you threw up just a little in your mouths after reading the thread title. ;)

But seriously, with the reports that Arsenal turned down bids of £50m for Henry, supposedly from both Barcelona and Real Madrid, it got me thinking. What's the number that a team would have to come up with to pry "the white Pele" from us? Perish the thought, I know, I know. But let's say some club had ridiculously silly money to throw at us. What would your breaking point be?

Sure, we'd lose probably our best player, most important player, and a kid who is already one of the top players in the world and will almost certainly be the best one day and one of if not the best player this club has ever had, all in theory of course. But money talks, and we could buy a LOT of quality players to run this team for the next decade with that kind of dough. Just saying. Couple world-class mids, another quality striker, maybe a winger... think about it.

I know, I'm a bastard for coming up with a poll this devious and quite frankly a bit masochistic. And no, there's no "Wayne is priceless" option because we all have our price. You know you do. :D

I should think Rooney's valuation should be close to Henry's, especially if it's being paid with Russia's plundered oil wealth. ;)

How much did it cost us to buy Rooney from Everton? Wasn't it somewhere in the mid £20's? And back then, people were saying it was an expensive buy because:
a) Rooney's English; and
b) It's Manchester United

Too many options Achtung.

1. Under 50
2. 50-89M
3. Over 90M

I doubt that Real Madrid and Barcelona offered £50m for Henry. Certainly in the past Real Madrid have been insane enough to pay that kind of money, but I'd imagine even they must be starting to get realistic with their transfers.

I guess its in Arsenals interest to make their prime asset sound as valuable as possible so Dein may well have bumped up the figure.

In the case of Rooney, he's 8 years younger than Henry so he would have to be more valuable.

I think the most likely buyers would be Chelsea (would Rooney settle in Italy or Spain??) and it would be a case of them trying to de-capitate their main rivals. You would really want outrageous money in that case, at least £70m.

Not even for a "Get Out Of Debt Free" card.

£75m should be enough to get Gerrard, Diarra and Shevchenko (at the very least, 2 out of 3). I'll take that.

Dein is in fairlyland. Barca don't need Henry and Real Madrid can't do anything until they get their house in order. Neither are stupid enough to bid that amount for a player who only had a year left on his contract.

Considering Rooney is one of the best players in the world, his age, his potential and that he is already at an elite club, it would take 9 figures to even get us talking.

What Teso said makes sense..200M for Rooney sounds more like it.

I'd take 100m pounds and 2 of the buying team's star players.

Interesting responses... about what I expected, actually. :)

On the pitch I'd say 50-60m. But keep in mind the marketing potential he has... the young white Pele... the amount of money he can make the club simply by people being interested in watching should put him over 70m IMO.
I doubt Henry is worth 50m on the pitch for Arsenal, but people will come to their new stadium to watch HIM. And turn Arsenal on the TV, and help attract other quality playrers, etc..

£75m should be enough to get Gerrard, Diarra and Shevchenko (at the very least, 2 out of 3). I'll take that.

42m couldn't get Gerrard last year...

You cannot put a price on greatness. You can lock the thread now. :)

Voice training classes, so non-Scouse can understand you: £300

A facial, so that you don't scare young fans: £45

Granny Whores who are descrete, so you don't get caught: £1000/night

Being Wayne Rooney? Priceless

ok, in all seriousness... stupid money. Really really stupid money. 3 times what he's worth. He's probably worth £25M right now, so if we were to sell him now he should be sold for £75M+. If we were to sell him 2-3 years down the road when he's even more well rounded? Well then he'd be a get out of debt card. He'd be say £150M in my mind. He's an excellent player already world class at an age most world class players are nothing more than the next somebody. Rooney isn't the next anybody. He's Wayne Rooney.

Is it possible some journalist from The Sun might see this thread and publish an article about how United fans want Rooney sold and are discussing the fee?

It'd be no less ridiculous than some of the stuff they publish about Rooney.

Wha---We're selling Rooney?? :p

Has to be no less than 50, his age alone makes him damn valuable and he would pretty much fit in and improve every side I can think of. Hell he might even kickstart Inter to a scudetto.

As I wouldn't expect a "writer" from The Sun to understand the meaning of the word "theoretical", your scenario actually could be possible.
