Hey, I'm currently spending the summer in New Philadelphia, OH, doing some outdoor drama, and I was just wondering if there are any soccer fans in the area, if you guys can give me tips on sports bars, or where I can watch the world cup or MLS Matches. Or if there are any viewing parties, local support groups, etc. ANy help would be appreciated.
Thanx.

Hey Brook, it looks like I won't be able to make it up to Cleveland this Friday, but thanks the same for the kind invitation for accomodation. I'm not going to get out of town early enough, so I'm boned.

Oh, and if this is the town I'm thinking of, it's north of my in-laws. I was treated for a car accident at the hospital there, I think. Other than that, I've got nothing.

Even if you get cable, there's a lot of soccer available. If you have a dish, you can just install it at your new place and you're good to go.
I just went to the Adelphia website, typed in a New Philadelphia zipcode and was very surprised.
FSC is available on the local Adelphia Digital Cable, channel 132. This package will also get you ESPN News, and ESPN Classic. ESPN Classic is scheduled to rebroadcast one WC game on most nights in primetime, and a different WC game most mornings.
Adelphia includes the Columbus affiliate of NBC (shock to me) with their broadcast basic and ONN (Crew games) with expanded basic cable. I'm surprised the Columbus CBS affiliate isn't available, since it's supposedly one of the strongest signals in Columbus. At least the Columbus NBC affiliate will show Crew-related news and highlights throughout the season. Don't know about the other affiliates.
Adelphia does not advertise the MLS package. If they have it, you'd get a few games on tape-delay towards the end of the season. If you want that, you're better off getting a satellite or paying $20 to MLSnet.com and watching online.
If they do have it, one of the lovely advantages to cable is channel-sharing. During the year, the leagues will offer free previews. At least in Columbus, the early season MLB free preview means unadvertised NHL games for free. The MLS free preview means we get 4 of the NBA channels as well. Last fall, they gave us the early season NBA free preview and we got to see the last weekend or so of the MLS season. I believe these "unadvertised free previews" come without the "call to order" message. It's one of those things, that with limited bandwidth, there's not much that cable can apparently do about it. They don't advertise it and hope no one finds out, but we do.
I think some of these channels available on Adelphia show soccer games as well. The only disadvantage is that they're not in English.
