Am still having a major dilemma about whether to try to transfer(using "Family" as the reason) or not bother and hope that people with valid tickets won't be turned away.
If I transfer 4 tickets to my mates (I guess unlikely that they will accept anyway) can they pick up the new tickets at the stadium, with the relevant documentation?
The whole process just seems so ridiculously complicated!

I have tickets in my parents name (a genuine 'family' transfer - they're pretty rare! :D), but i'm not gonna bother.

What counts as family? I mean does my brother-in-law count as family?

We are all family, that's how I see it.
OK, except maybe your brother-in-law.

Has anyone actually had a transfer refused when using 'family' as the reason?

I've heard its got a pretty high success rate.
What if I transfer 4 tickets, all to different names? Surely questions will be asked?

I think this is the case if all four are transferred, but if it was a game the purchaser is going to (and then only the three guests are only changed) I think they can see that as most likely one guy but for friends and all is to the good.
BTW, I'm currently 8 for 8 on transfers. Yes accepted!

How long did it take for the transfers to be accepted?

Couple of days consistently.

That's good because I purchased the last tickets under my wifes name and I hope to get at least 1 more match. I don't think she wants to go so I was planning to transfer to her German brother-in-law that we are staying with.
