Many of you watched the new videos on US Soccer yesterday; I am referring to the clip of 1) Drew Carey on Jimmy Kimmel, and 2)the video of the media descending on Cary to cover practice.

I love how in the media video, Arena makes a joke about preparing for a Czech player by having a man walk around in stilts on the pitch, clearly making light of the question from the Czech reporter, and only one guy laughs (barely). You can hear crickets chirping. I think some thought he was serious. I at least thought it was funny and spit coke out on my desk.
Can anyone make out exactly what Tim Howard said to Olsen after that great goal? Its weird, because some reports claim that Timmy is tearing it up at camp, but it seems like every US Soccer video shows him getting torched on goal in practice. I don't know what to think.:( . I guess as long as Keller is fine, we are Ok.
As for the Drew Carey video, I like the guy more each day. he gets it. He really does love soccer. too bad his favorite team (L.A.) couldnt beat that "Carolina Battery" squad. But the man is trying to get the sport out there, and he wishes he was "more" famous so maybe he could win more converts. I look forward to his travel channel show.

I think Tim says something to the effect of "That was unbelieveable, man. Keep it up" and then gives the non-gay athletic butt slap. There was nothing he could do about that golazo. Watch the 6v6 vid where he makes those good saves. I'm sure there are some other saves that we haven't seen that show his success in camp so far.

WOW. It stinks!
I could taste Arena's arrogance when he pushed that sarcastic humor at the Czech reporters.
I think I'm gonna find a Drew Carey fan site and figure out every TV appearance he makes... the Jack Nicholson of the LA Galaxy? I think he's definitely the Jack Nicholson of the USMNT. I almost got pissed when Kimmel asked if Carey was gay, then I realized it was a photography joke and not a soccer joke.

These are promotional videos. What do people like to see? Goals. What makes people feel better about this team? Guys scoring goals. From the size of the pitch in that 6v6 video, they obviously get a LOT of shots in practice (as they should). So a lot will go in, irrespective of how the keepers play. I wouldn't make anything out of the videos.

Hmmm... cool idea for a video, though: put together a montage of all the best saves by the keepers throughout the camp. I bet it would be pretty spectacular, and, given the soccernerdiness of the folks who are visiting USSOCCER.com every day looking for the next video, I bet it would be quite well received.

which reminds me of my main complaint against the new All Access format...no longer able to scroll through the segment (that and why can't we re-size the viewer?)
I heard "that was amazing..."
And I'd consider it fairly amazing since that was a left-footed drive. And Beninho ain't left-footed.

Keep in mind that all these videos where you see Timmy being torched are like point blank shots. Even making saves at all is spectacular.
I think that last shot would have beat 99% of the GKs in the world.

Good point. I am sure I over-reacted. It would be cool to see the keeper saves from camp though. People like goals, but they can appreciate saves as well.
DiscoWarrior, I too got angry about the "Gay" comment from kimmel, until I realized he was joking about the photography, not the footy.
I guess I am so used to some actual morons I know assuming that all soccer players are gay, that my defense mechanism goes up quickly. It seems like Carey himself was confused about what Kimmel was saying, until Jimmy clarified.

Dude is an all heart, sweat & elbows kind of guy. I'm glad he's on the roster as for me he serves as the perfect counter-balance for the historical Reyna-esce yeilding to european superiority.
Not to mention he is building a nice portfolio of long range goals... always a nice to have in a keeper's mind

That free kick from JOB was amazing, it looked like it was going to sky and then just dropped like a 12-6 curve. Simply beautiful

It's good to have an American "celebrity" out pimping soccer like that.
The parts about how rich he is and how he often forgets how fabulously rich he is made me want to puke, though. Dude, if you're so rich, it's time to stop buying your clothes from KMart.
It's great to see Timmeh! back between the posts. I think we can all expect KK to retire from international play soon and pass the torch on. Keller at bat, Timmaugh on deck, Guzan in the hole.
I know this was from a couple of days ago - but the video of the guys with the converted schoolbus had something in it that caught my eye. When Gooch autographed the ball, he was riding shotgun. Do you think they call it, or does everyone automatically defer to Gooch, so he don't have to choke a bitch? :D

Where does this come from? Did you see him against Germany in '02? He yielded nothing. the warmup game against the Dutch, where Reyna and Davids had a midfield battle for the ages? Seriously...

seriously, if Reyna yeilded to European superiority, his career would have been over (or at least being played in the MLS) a long time ago.

I think what jkmq was implying is Ben is a typical MLSer - bash and bang - tons of physical fight, but maybe not so much finess; whereas the rest of us see the EPL/international game as having a great physical requirment, but ALSO a very large finess component. I'd agree, Reyna holds his own just fine.

The "Reyna-esce yeilding" I was refering to was more in perceived attitude than physical ability. Obviously Reyna can play with the euros as an individual as he has for his entire career. However, he has been quoted in the past making comments inferring that the USMNT doesn't have a chance, will be lucky for a win, etc. (not argueing whether those thoughts may be the reality). Admittedly, it has been a while since those sort of comments were made... which is why I said "historically"
Basically, I don't want to hear that kind of crap from the guy wearing the arm band for our team. It's too defeatist and sends powerfully negative messages to younger less experienced players.
The larger point I was attempting to make is that Benny is the type of guy still charging for 50-50's at the final whistle despite being down 3-0. That is the type of heart that I am happy to see represented on the team. If for nothing other than a locker room attitude... I'm happy. But I also see Benny's utility on the field. His "f*&% it, I'll take a shot from here" attitude is nice too see... especially, when the team might be intimidated by an opponents stature and subsequently hesitant to shoot like in the 98 cup.
Oh, and i missed the reyna-davids match-up

Nice point. Ben Olsen is the most under-rated, most unfairly crapped-on-by-BS-posters player in our national team pool. He can play. He's a tough mofo with skill.
