I think the most effective formation if you have the personel is a 5-3-2. With the two formations below we would have excelent width, the defence would be extra solid with Nevile more central. The pace up front would be excelent with quality players in CM to feed them, We would have a quality player to protect the 3 central defenders. As an bonus the bench would be exceptional. It would also give us the opportunity to comfortably change to a 4-4-2 or even 4-3-3. What do you guys think?
Formation 1: What I would choose if the personel were available
Daniel Alves Nevile Rio Vidic Heinze
Daniel De Rossi/Mascherano
Xabi Ronaldo
Rooney
Torres
Bench: Giggs, Scholes, Saha, Evra, Rossi
Formation 2: What I would choose with more realistic targets.
Daniel Alves Nevile Rio Vidic Heinze
Mascherano/Diarra
MikelArteta Ronaldo
Rooney
Saha
Bench: Giggs, Scholes, Rossi, Evra

That formation would be worse than the 4-3-3 that everyone complained about us not playing attacking football.
How the hell do we play attacking football with 5 defenders in the team? Thats not natural width, because if the get caught out, we would get stretched at the back quite easily. Then to counter, we wouldnt be able to stretch opponents defense quickly enough.

There's a reason Prem clubs don't use the 352/532..

Daniel Alves is as much an attacking player as he is a defender, he gives great width in the Cafu mould and can score goals.
This line up although the formation would not be defensive it would be very attacking as the full backs would act like wing backs giving plenty of width.
With regard to my Formation 2 it is not living in dream world all additions to the team are realistic targets and obtainable especially taking into consideration that Ruud is probably leaving, why could we not get in Diarra, Mikel Arteta & Daniel Alves?
My Formation 1 as I said were players I would choose if they would come and we could without doubt afford them.
No need to be sarcastic guys. I am serious, I think those teams could play entertaining football, I think EPL teams would find it difficult to cope with them and it allows great room for changing the style of play e.g we could easily push Alves into RM & Nevile into RB = 4-4-2 if necessary. Another option would be to bring on on either Giggs or Scholes take off Alves = 4-4-2

Heres a couple things:
Barcelona and Liverpool are in for Daniel Alves. Why enter a transfer saga for a player we dont exactly need?
3-5-2 would make our defense easier to stretch.

The game at the EPL is much more tactically nuanced. Dani Alves would only be a sub for Man Utd, frankly I don't understand why Benitez wants Alves , I figure he doesn't like Kromkamp or Finnan or whomever else is on the right. Alves is just as small as Evra if not a bit smaller. Good managers would take advantage of Alves' lack of strength/height as other clubs tried to do to Evra.
Alves has pace and tenacity and a good shot from distance..but the reason he gets that space is because Jesus Navas is very good, very, very good. And Fast. Hell, MOST of Sevilla's team is fast as hell. The slowest players are probably Navarro and Maresca!

I don'tr honestly know why Benitez seems to always want somebody to take Finnan's place. First he brought in Josemi who was crap but played first until Finnan continuously proved better than him, and in a poll over on the Liverpool forum they voted him their second or third best player after Carragher, and possibly Gerrard (can't remember perfectly, but it was very close). After that Kromkamp was brought in and Benitez tried to squeeze him into he first team, but it failed and Finnan was one of Liverpool's better and more consistent players again (very similar to Irwin in that regard, almost never has a bad game). Now he is trying to bring in Daniel Alves... why?

Thats what makes me wonder. He wants to turn that club into a Latin American haven.

I tried the 5-3-2 formation on my PS3 and it didn't work. The United players all looked confused as to their roles. Let's stick with the 4-4-2.

Daniel Alves is just the personel I would choose to put in that position who we would have a possibility of getting. Your idea of personel for that wing back position in that formation may be different! This thread is about the formation and how our current players would fit in, The personel we would have to bring in to fill the positions is down to opinion.
Alves is Tenacious and although lightweight is very hard like cafu or Heinze. With Nevile Rio & Vidic in CD it would be very difficult to exploit. To me it would make our defence even more secure as I think Nevile next to Rio aswell we would have a rock hard defence.
With a world class holding CM and creative CM who is great in possession with the pace of Ronaldo on the left side of midfield + the fact that Rooney plays in the hole and pics up possession all over the park and a pace attacker like Saha I don't see a real argument against it.
It would give our players like Ronaldo and Rooney so much freedom and Ronaldo would excel in the left side of midfield with the ability to work on the left flank with the security of heinze behind him or having to ability to make runs infield onto his right foot.

TOO STRETCHED.
By the way, Alves is nothing like Heinze from what Ive seen.

By the way I do not want to turn the team into a Latin American haven. With Rio,Neville,Rooney,Scholes,Giggs hopefully David Jones coming through I want the core of the team to be British.
The formation is not too stretched if applied properly at all it would also help us out to be more successfull in europe. You also forget it's versatility to change which is very important in modern football.
Alves may not be as hard as Heinze I have seen quite a bit of him and trust me he can more than look after himself and put the boot in.
You still have not given a real reason why this cannot work and anything you have said I have given an answer for.
