It would be nice if they told us what areas we should avoid, I think its the east. Can anybody in Germany tell us how much of a threat this can be?

One german politician said that blacks should better not visit places like Brandenburg(around Berlin) and the small cities in eastern germany cuz he fears 4 their security.

I think this old fart is insane, the chances are 100 times higher that you get beaten by a turk than by a skinhead.

This is the typical media bullshit, there will be no problems.

I must admit I would get a perverse pleasure out of seeing these guys get their ass whooped.

This is sad because I would imagine that 99.7% of Germans hate nazis as much as the Brits, French, Dutch, Polaks and Jews do. Hopefully there won't be too much of this during the WC.

i believe there are many countries around the world with more neo nazis than germany but because of the History it gets totally overblown.

the guy who mentioned this already said that he exaggerated.
You won't visit the parts he mentioned anyway.

He's absolutely right and I was surprised that there was finally a politician who had the balls to tell truth. Unfortunately he kinda took back his comments... doesn't make them any less valid.

And mofo4life, suuuuuuuuuuuuure...

Actually it wasn't...

Anyone who thinks that this statement was wrong probably has an ostrich somewhere in his family tree.

the statement wasn't wrong but a little bit exeggerated don't you think?
there are definitely problems with these idiots in germany but tell me which country doesn't have these problems!

Well, put on a "Nazis raus" shirt or so and spend a day in Rathenow and see what happens...

As I wrote in another thread "of course there aren't daily progroms or so and most areas should be pretty safe" but you can't ignore the fact that there have been racist murders in Germany and that there is absolutely no reasons at all it couldn't happen again.

there are definitely problems with these idiots in germany but tell me which country doesn't have these problems!

Which means that it's ok? Everytime some act of racist violence happens, you get the feeling that people are far more concerned with "Germany's image in the world" (as they call it) than with actually doing something.

I found this article with a map of the berlin areas.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2006/04/30/wberlin30.xml&sSheet=/news/2006/04/30/ixworld.html

Is it really this bad? My hotel is in Lichtenberg. Should I consider changing hotel?

Rathenow can't be worse than Kreuzberg or Neukölln, but i guess you'll only see the problems in eastern germany.

Let me guess you belong to the 68-Generation and vote 4 the greens.

No, there are also Nazis in the West, of course - although on a much smaller scale. I was born in Sachsen-Anhalt in the good old German Democratic Republic, btw.

The Greens? No way, far to middle-class for my liking...

I have to admit that I'm no expert on the situation in Berlin, but I guess I couldn't hurt to contact some locals (there are some on BigSoccer ;)).

Did you read the article? Personally I find a bit worrysome that someone even feels the need to publish a guide like this.

I'd be more worried about the cops. In Frankfurt I had a run in with some cop in Februaury and I am still trying to figure out exactly what happened. Apparently, I fit the description of some criminal thay were searching for.

I live in Los Angeles and know very well how things get blown out of proportion when they're published in the media. However, for an organization to have to publish a guide, it sends the message that this is a very serious problem. The article says about 15,000 incidents in 2005 (10,000 violent) . that's around 41 incidents a day. For a county the size of germany, that a lot.

Those are the official government numbers, btw.

(I know it's also in the article, just wanted to underline this ;))

The 10000 number in the article refers to the estimated number of violent extremists though.

The number of violent acts (just looked it up) was "only" about 1000 in 2005.

thats definately a serious problem but imo it gets a little bit overblown because of germany's history! i just read an statistic of racistic attacks in 2003 and Germany has 11.576 while the UK has 49.078 so we have to keep it in perspective!
